|
|
Hi,
I'm the proud new owner of a 1980 (1981 Model Year) 924 Turbo, in Guards Red with a black/white Pasha interior. Recon turbo, recon head, new big ends and rings. I'm really enjoying it, These cars are so underated!
My biggest gripe is my transmission. Synchro on second is completely shot and it's pretty weak on fourth. I learnt to drive on a car with no
synchromesh, so double-declutching isn't a problem, it's just really boring!
Anyway, I found myself a replacement 'box on ebay. Got it for £50, which I'm pretty pleased with, and am assured it's in fine fettle (we'll see!).
Anyway, I've got to organise a courier to pick it up for me and I've no idea how much the 'box weighs. It's a G31/01 dogleg 'box. I need to know the weight before I can get a quote from the courier, and the chap I'm buying it off can't weigh it for a few days.
Anybody know?

Well, you're in luck, as the dogleg/snailshell transmissions are slightly lighter than the Audi ones... trans weight dry is 45kg dry, as opposed to 55kg for the Audis (per the Tech Specs book - that's 99/121lbs). _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'm sure you have considered this, but I might be concerned that a cheap used snail is likely to suffer from. . .(drum roll). . .bad 2nd gear synchros. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thanks guys, I was guessing about 50kg.
I agree, there's always a risk when buyinused parts, particularly used snailhells by the sound of it. However, I did speak to the seller (in fact I couldn't get him off the phone!) and he told me the history of the car it came off (one owner 69,000 miles but rusty) and said he'd driven it and there were no problems with the box. Obviously I don't know him from Adam, but he seems to be an enthusiast and know what he's talking about. He owns two 924 Turbos currently.
There are two other snailshells available on ebay here in the UK. One is £75 'Buy It Now' and admits to requiring a rebuild and the other is £275, claimed good, from a Porsche breaker. I reckon the £50 one with claims that it's good is worth a try!

Hmmm, when I weighed mine there was not that much difference. They were both "wet".

Even once I knew the weight, no courier firms seemed very keen on touching it. One company needed a certificate to show it had been drained and steam-cleaned before they even considered the job. As luck would have it, a friend was up that way and picked it up for me.
Anyway, fitted it now and I have a whole 'box full of synchromesh! What a luxury! _________________ 1980 ('81 MY) 924 Turbo

Just carried an Audi box into the shed on my own, can't be 55kg unless I'm stronger than I think...
I would guess at 30kg or so. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Hi All
I need to establish the factory weight of my car (1977 with optional 5 speed, Getrag box) for racing min weights. I read with interest in this post about the 10kg weight difference between the getrag and Audi gear box and the mention of a tech spec book.
Can anyone help me find a copy of the tech spec book?
Cheers
