Hi all,

Last summer I rescued a '77 924 that had been sitting for 16 years in a concrete floor garage. Took a few months to sort but was able to drive it around a bit by autumn. Put it away over the winter, started it up this spring without too much issue. Drove it in June then it sat for about three weeks.

Upon the next attempted drive, it started hard but once running it was seemingly running on two cylinders. Seemed like maybe fouled plugs but I couldn't clear it out. Eventually I realized two wires were loose so I snapped them back on the plugs and it got a little better. The wires were the only ignition item we hadn't changed because I couldn't source them quickly locally. So eventually I sourced some and put those on. Running got a little better, but in gear the car simply refuses to accelerate with any throttle application at all.

When I got the car there was a ton of rust in the gas tank. We've cleaned it out the best we could without removing it. We replaced both fuel accumulators and I'm on my second fuel pump now because the fuel detritus killed the first one. It also completely consumed the first fuel filter. So now we have a filter before the pump to protect it in addition to the stock one.

My guy who got it running initially thought maybe the fuel distributor was gummed up so I sourced a rebuild kit and he went through it. No change in how it ran. Then he thought on a lark it might be the coil. So we changed that. It ran a little better but still will not accept throttle in gear. Somehow the fuel distributor started leaking and at that point he couldn't seal it properly so I sourced a remanufactured fuel distributor out of Australia. It arrived today and he put it on, and the car will idle fine but it just refuses to accept any throttle application to accelerate.

My mechanic isn't a Porsche or K-Jet expert by any means, but he's been doing this 40+ years and he's not an idiot. The car was literally running 100% fine when I let it sit for three weeks (rotated it out to drive some other toys), and when I came back to it, it won't hardly go.

We are at our wits' ends. What should we be looking at?

You probably need to start with the fuel pressure tests to ensure fueling is correct.

Check the timing, has the distributor slipped?

At what location should we check the pressure, and what should it be?

I can't imagine the distributor randomly slipped while parked, but I will ensure he has checked the timing again.

Get yourself a CIS Pressure gauge (and test. They are fitted in the top port of the fuel distributor where the hose heads to the WUR.

Also, I'm not sure if you are on Facebook, but the Porsche 924 group has a "Starting a Long Dead 924" document written by Jim delToro that you you can download from the files section.

From what I am hearing about your issue, to me, it sounds just like a fuel delivery issue.

Go get that document I mentioned. It will walk you through the entire process and tell you what the different reading mean. It could be anything from a bad fuel pump, to a gummed up FD, to a bad fuel pump. It's all in there.
