Yes, welded in place, Trendab motorsport will help me with that aswell. I cant get into mittelmotor website, can you? On their page there are several pics on how it looks when welded into place,.but i couldn't get the link.

The complete bottom end is now home again, very nice. 87mm omega pistons, ARP rod bolts with remachined big ends, balanced crank, machined deck surface etc. Also the oil pan got its baffle welded in, simple thing but im glad i didnt have to weld it in.

Also started working on my DiY flow test rig, for testing the pressure drop over different components. It was a good oportunity when i had all my piping available, and a spare air box (which i might mod a bit furter on). Volume flow measurment is done by measruing speed in the inlet pipe, thats the idea at least. Seems to work ok but need more data to be sure of what Im doing

How could i live my life without a 3D printer

Thanks to my friends we got the engine out finally, which is very nice. So now I can finally start disassembly, so i can get the parts of that needs to be transfered to the other engine, like intake, exhaust, oil pump etc.

Since theres at least on out there interested in whay i do with my flow test rig i add a little update, i have update the measurment system a little bit, so now i thought it was time for a test. The painful edge in the boost pipe where the ic piping meets the original cast boost pipes has always is a thing we have been discussing here before. Now i thought it was time to test me alternative printed lower charge pipe and a printed rounded insert to the standard pipe.

This was only the cast pipes, with and without insert.


Then i tried the complete IC to throttle piping, with and without insert, measurment wasnt as tidy, need to sort my flow regulation (which is ducttape at the moment) but gives me good data. The yellow line is the pipe between the compressor and IC. If i remember correctly the massflow was around max 4,3 m3/min in my simulation model (after the compressor), albeit alot higher density, which will affect the absolute numbers.

Not that interesting to most people, but useful and fun for me, especially as I continue the work with the airbox later on. Im glad the very simple test rig setup seems can actually be used for evaluating stuff. And since in my professional background, the demands on system like this was part of my job, its a bit funny to finally getting a grip on my own stuff

Does that mean that the conical lower boost pipe insert resulted in noticeably less pressure drop?

It makes a good bit of difference?

yes, it did do a fairly big difference, the results with the insert were similar to the printed pipe i did for a 2" hose (see pic below). The edge itself was a farily big factor for pressure drop as expected. I mean its not massive, but i like to tinker and it hurts my brain to have it like that.

I dont think i will have time to finish the completely new pipe. Instead I think of porting up the hole to the same inner diameter as a 2" pipe. Then 3d print a sleeve so the 2" pipe can sit perfectly centered in the cast pipe. Then use a 2,5-2" coupler on the outside. This to also create more space since i have it so tight down there.

Just wanted to plant this test idea in your head for when you have time to spare. Internal guided vanes which would work especially nice with 3D printing. Obviously where it might make sense (tights bends, etc)

They can absolutely make sense, but its not as easy as it looks. I actually did a small project at work where we made a lot of CFD work to make a challenging bend/expansion work with the help of guide vanes. Its easy in theory but harder than it looks, since you really need to know how the flow field behaves in the bend, and place the guide vanes carefully, theres a big risk of inducing unwanted turbulence in other areas instead that causes pressure losses. But it would be fun to experiment with some day, as you say, its easy to do with printed parts, or at least easier.

The project is creeping forward in snail pace, everytime i start working with is i discover some new things i have to deal with. Like the manifold that needed machining to get flat, and rewelding a crack, then nothing fit the engine anymore, and several other things that popes up one after another.

Anyway, the engine is pretty much complete, would need to get my engine crane over here soon so i can fit up the clutch and flywheel. Slowly getting there.

I also sold my old DIY coil over setup to another 924 that is track driven, i hope he will enjoy them. So therefore I had to order a new set, i chose to test the GAZ gold, but with an extended stroke of about 1", they dont do metric there . What they offer of the shelf is way to short, and pretty much gives you no way of chosing rideheight and still have full suspenition travel, not a good choice. Howver, modifying the dimension is included in the standard pricing, so thanks for Larkspeeed for handling my slightly complicated order, and also the quick turnaround when they sent me struts with the wrong stroke the first time

I will start with the same springs as today, 350lbs up front and 28mm bars at the rear, to test out the dampers in the same conditions. And then i also ordered some stiffer springs (425lbs i think), and some additional weak rear springs to balance things out.

Regarding the boost pipe i fiddled with before. I made a template, ported it out (see the picture how much i removed. And then printed an adapter to stick in the 2inch pipe. This will be much better both flow and space wise compared to my old 2,5" setup.



Will put a hose over it later, and also i will need to squeeze the pipe in a vice to make it fit, although less than before.


New suspension from GAZ, the top pic has the correct stroke.
