I am going to pick up a 1980 931 Turbo this coming Friday and have been trying my best to read up about the cars. I see people talking about the S1 and S2 models and was wondering what that meant. I assume it is just different generation years but any information is great!

If you stand outside of them the differences are subtle.
In Europe the S1 didnt have fender mounted turning signals for example.
The colors sold for the S1 are mostly different from the ones sold for the S2.
Inteior is the same business, S1 had green dials, S2 had normal 924 dials and there are some colors/materials that were only S1 or only S2.

However, if you have a look deeper, the cars are different in many ways.
Even the chassis is different in some areas...here are some of the different things: different clutch, different turbocharger, slightly different fuel injection, different intake and charge pipes, vastly different crank venting system, vastly different ignition system and therefore different engine wiring, different pistons and compression ratio, sway bar design is different, in USA the gearbox is the dogleg for the S1 and the normal Audi type for the S2, different hvac systems and controls...and then there are smaller more subtle differences here and there like improved castings for the intake manifolds for the S2 and things like this.
Basically its more or less what Porsche does every time, rebuild the "same" car but a little bit differently and a little bit better.

The S2 is smoother to drive, more reliable and more consistent, it feels a bit more modern and evolved than the S1. The S1 feels very much like the original 924, an iron brick

To distinguish them visually very easily you have to look at Intake manifold and Turbocharging Pressure pipe.
Porsche / 924 turbo - logo are diferent - see pictures.
1979-1980 S1
1980-1982 S2

S1 green dials - are hard too miss

Never assume what you have is 100% correct. Many cars may have had swapped out S1 & S2 parts by previous owners + garages...... short VIN on the RHS suspension turret is S1. long VIN on the bulkhead is S2 built from July/August 1980 on model year '80. The other confusion on here is RoW versus USA specs

It has been known for some late build S1 cars to have the odd S2 part from the factory.
