I was pulling the head from my latest parts car and after removing the cam, which was damn near perfect (Yay), I pulled the lifters. Statring from the back of the head they all came up nicely 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Wait, what the F*** ? The last one I pulled up came easily without the usual sucking sound.

This is why :

Considering the cam was in excellent shape and 6 of the other lifters were almost perfect I can only surmise this was a factory defective lifter ? Anyone else ever seen anything like it ?

The edges are perfectly clean with zero damage to the pocket in the head. Sucker just shattered like glass.

Never seen that before. Where were the fragments??? I can't see how it would have broken like that without the pieces damaging the lifter bore.

The other couple pieces were between the outer spring and the bore. They were held vertical and large enough not to twist or cause damage. Like I say it's really strange because the cam is in awesome condition as are 6 of the other lifters. The other damaged lifter has pitting on the top but nothing unusual.

Things that make you go hmmm...
