I am getting ready to do about $2000 worth of body work and painting to my 87 924S My friend has a bodyshop that we are going to do it in. My olny question is will sanding the car do anything to the galvenized metal??? Or will everything be ok and stary rust proof??

Porsche Fan,
Dave

I'd use a 2-part epoxy paint just to make sure. If it works on steel boats on salt water, it should work on a car. dwak

I am not a paint expert, but I have been told that unless there is an issue with the paint you have on there...
You should only "skuff" the paint or use a chemical strip to take the paint off. You can sand the zinc off and
will no longer have the corrosion protection.

Dave what is the name of the shop. I hope to get a good paint job plus some minor body work for about the same total.

whatever you do, don't sand down to the metal, unless you plan on zinc coating it again, or if you have rust there already then you will have to anyway.
If you sand down to the metal it takes off the zinc layer that they put on and/or that has formed, over the years these coatings are supposed to get thicker and thicker and better but take away some of the metal itself (not very much) as oxygen is emmersed (all the time of course), so if you sand down to the metal you will take the layer off that has formed over the years and the layer they put on there, and it will be just normal metal and rust readily and easily

Hi Dave,

Just to add to whats already been said, dust from sanding galvanised metal is highly toxic (as are fumes from welding galvanised meatal). So hey, lets be carefull out there!!!!!!

Cheers
