This is very useful info, as always... I was wondering how the rear suspension would swap over since the 944s seemed wider.

Right now I'm pulling the suspension off of a '85.5, but it is incomplete. I'm missing a lot of rear suspension components, namely the rear stub axles and and calipers all around. They even took the brake rotors off the rear! I believe there is no sway bar for the rear either. The front looks like its mostly there, minus the calipers, but I need to take a closer look.

I think the '85.5 is missing the master cylinder and brake booster unfortunately.

I will be taking the '84 944 he has and an '85.5 auto. The '84 will be scavenged for parts, due to the rear end damage, to get the '85.5 fully operational. I am wondering if the rear spindles on the '84 will wok with the '85.5 rear suspension I already pulled? How about the master cylinder and brake booster? I was also going to use the calipers and dust shields off the '84, will these work with the later suspension?

There is also an '87 that I could pull suspension parts from if need be, but I think that is missing the rear stub stub axles too...

I have no experience with the Auto stuff, but I presume that the outer hubs / stub axles are interchangeable, PET would reveal for certain.

On the 85.5, does it have alu or steel trailing arms? I was under the impression that the alu arms didn't make it onto normal 944 until 1986, but I'm not 100% certain. If the 85.5 has steel rear trailing arms, everything should be swappable.

The floating calipers are all interchangeable throughout the model range (5-lugged equipped 2.0L 924 through the end of the 944/951 model range).

The brake shields are different due to how they bolt to the trailing arm / caliper carriers.

The easiest way to ensure compatibility is to stick with steel trailing arms, and source any and all rear conversion parts from steel trailing arm-equipped 944. There are two minor disadvantages to staying with the steel trailing arm setup:
1. Alu trailing arms / hubs had bigger and better bearings
2. Alu trailing amrs open up the possibility of the late 944 rear shocks, including coilovers. You can still do coilovers on steel trailing arms, but you have to use the QA1 stuff referenced in Vaughan's post stickied over in the Performance Upgrade forum. The late 944 shocks mount differently and are not swappable onto steel trailing arms, at least not without fabrication or modification.

Took care of the timing belt and all the rest this weekend, and swapped in a new waterpump, and an in-tank pump I pulled from a junked car. The car started up after a bit of hesitation, but still will not idle. I did notice that the PO seems to have installed the wrong fuel pump, so this may be a good start.

Next I need to figure out the clutch, as the pedal went strait to the floor and stayed there. I'll have to see what haynes has on that. Any tips? Can I use 944 parts or should I source new 931 parts?? I haven't really investigated this issue, as I'm also in the middle of doing the wheel bearings on my bimmer.

I still haven't dealt with the rust in the coolant system yet either, this car is coming along slowly...

I meant to ask last night, and I almost forgot. The in-tank pump I pulled off the junked car had this crumbling red "gasket" around the lip that mates to the gas tank. I removed it since it was mostly gone already, but is there anything I can get to replace it? It didn't seem like it was a separate part, but rather part of the fuel pump.

I believe you want this.

Also, this will prove to be invaluable when looking for parts.

Yes! I guess the one I pulled the gasket was so old it looked as if it were part of the pump itself. I was already thinking up ways to use a gasket maker to replace it. I'm glad I didn't go ahead with any of my plans.

I saw your site is back up. I'm going to take a look tonight, but I also need to get suspension parts for my bimmer so those may take priority.
