I'm feeling a bit noobish for this but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the fuel filter out of this car, and after having completed a transmission transplant this is making me feel rather dimwitted lol. The fitting on the top of the filter is easy enough to get off but I can't figure out how to get a wrench on the bottom. There is not enough room around the sides of the filter from the top, and I can't see how to get at it from the bottom either; it seems to be right over the cross-member under the engine. Haynes is rather vague as well. Any tips or tricks anyone can share? Thanks!

Take off the big circlip that holds the filter to the engine bay. Then you can rotate it however you like to get the bottom nut off.

Great! Thanks, Raize. I was also able to get a wrench on it from the bottom better than I thought I'd be able to, and being able to move it around definitely helped. Now the old one is out (it was so old it said "Made in W. Germany"). Having a little trouble getting the bottom nut started but I will have an assistant help me hold the new filter in place while I line it up from the bottom and that should make it easier.

Hey mate. Same problem here. I removed the air filter box and got better access after then removing the clip. The top nut I think is seized!, I tried mole wrench for better grip and leverage, but still can't budge it! Wd40 doesn't help either. I think I've pulled another muscle on my arms. Aaah Any ideas please?

The only thing I can think of is spray the fitting with an excellent penetrating lubricant like PB Blaster. Remove the air box and get a line wrench on the bottom part of the filter. You want it to be on the filter itself not the nuts that go into it. I believe it is a 3/4" or the metric equivalent. It may help to have an assistant hold the bottom wrench while you turn the top one. I want to say the nuts that go into the filter are 19mm. Then wrench and pray.

Sorted. 19mm is right. Overnight soak in wd40 worked. Turned down the filter to get better access to the bottom nuts. They are a different combination of nut sizes, but got them free. Removed both connections off old filter and refitted new one. It's the most shiny piece in the engine bay now!
Cheers again.
