What are the symptoms of a ruined or malfunctioning wastegate? Does anyone know?

Rick I am not a turbo expert, but have experienced a turbo with a bad waste gage diaphragm.
Here is what it did. Under full boost at about 4200 rpms the car elt like it hit the rev limiter.
Car went on and off boost. It only happened when you put your foot to the floor at about 2000
rpms and let the car rev up that way. At 3/4 throttle and lower boost the car would rev up to
5000 plus with out this issue. Turned out to be diaphragm. Was not my car so I am not sure
if the owner actually ever fixed it.

I do not know if this is similar to your experience, but that is all I know.

Just a note, make sure you test all the other over-boost circuits and such before you go replacing components.

Ya I'm stuck however. I replaced the electric overboost switch that connects to the fuel pump relay. Same problem remains.

Good tips came from one man who suggested maybe the hoses around the intake were leaking under boost. However, I can't find any visual deformaties or leaks under the hood. The piping looks good. So I'm kind of stuck replacing the wastegate until a better theory comes along.
