79 Shifter certering spring pictures?

The centering spring on my shifter (snailshell 5 speed) wasn't actually doing anything. It was just loose on the rod that's attached to the shifter that serves as the shifter's pivot point.
In looking at the spring I can't determine how it's supposed to be installed so that it imparts centering force to the shifter. A picture anyone might have of one properly installed would be great!

That spring is not really required but it helps with the feel of the shifter.
