is it possible to retro-fit power steering to a 924?
can you use parts from a 924 s or 944?
thanks in advance. _________________ I KNEW white wall tyres were invented by Americans .....just not at Boeing.... to be fitted on the 737..... |

Ideola sells adapter brackets for the 924S/944 power rack to the cross member. Don't look to hard to fab locally, but you want to be sure since a broken rack mount would be bad.
The other option is to adapt the 924S/944 aluminum cross member to the 924 chassis, which requires altering the frame mounting to fit the mounting hardware.
Pump mounting, belt routing and hoses are up to you to fab.
Another member here adapted the electric power steering from. GM passenger car to his 924's column. Didn't look too bad to do if you can weld or know someone that does that you'd trust.
There's a couple of posts about it here, a quick Google search should come up with the posts. _________________ Stefan

The PAS system column itself under Aus spec cannot be welded, I took the centre section to be machined at an engineering shop due to the precision and tolerances being beyond the tools I have in my garage. The rest so gar is mounting could be done without welding if you got clever...

My wife had zero problem handling my car on the Tail of the Dragon. Lotus doesn't use power steering on the Elise either |

Under way isn't the problem, it's when the car is stopped or at very low speed, especially when you use wide, sticky tires.
The Elise also doesn't have the same amount of weight on the nose as the 924 does. Let alone the overall amount of weight. _________________ Stefan

You might wanna read (google) into the Corsa C Electronic Powersteering.
The story goes they are easy to adept to older vehicles like Golf, Escort etc.
Would these fit underneath the 924 dash?

I looked into this. It would be a tight fit was the advice I had from a steering mechanic but it is doable as leadfoot has done it.
My power steering retro-fit is almost done. I used a 944 power rack and intermediate steering shaft. Dan's adapters were not much help, I think because my car is RHD. The x-member had to be modified to make the rack sit in the middle. And so the outer tierods had to be modified (shortened?) to fit within the 931 front end. I will run an electric pump (Astra, I think) from the driver's side wheel well with hoses running to the front. I will get some pics to post. _________________ 1981 932 with mods:
