Very Cool!!! Now I want to go find a 924 to bring back from the void of non-usage.

Good luck.

I know where one is.

Hahahahaha, I would be sleeping on the couch for a good while

Great job on getting the car running!!!

Careful with that brake leak though, before you know it the reservoir will be dry and no brakes, or brake pressure.

Cheers,

Ian

Update

We have begun preparing for engine removal! As we now have 2 engines we shall check them both and use the one with the least amount of wear. We suspect that this 924 we are working now has a lot more milage than the white one.

We hade to stop working with the removal because the previous owner found 4 wheels. 15" BBS wheels fitted with winter tires! They will be perfect in the winter season!

We continue with the engine removal

First we had to jack the car.

The exhaust manifold came of after some penetrating fluid.

Removing the front crossmember.

Loosening the throttle wire.

Loosening hard to reach hoses on the back.

Hardest part is the bell housing.

Attaching the engine lift!

Had to remove the hood.

Clutch cable.

Last step, the engine mountings.

Finally! Its out

Some cables still attached to the generator.

Removing the clutch!

And the flywheel.

Now its prepared for the engine stand

This thread is like picking up a how to book with great pics!!! Please keep them coming. I get excited when I see updates to this thread...it means more great stuff to look at!!

Motor looks pretty good. Suspension definitely shows signs of sitting there and salt being used on the roads in winter. Me cross member looked about the same, a little less rust, but was coated in a thick coat of really old oil so it kinda preserved it. I just took all of my suspension components to a powder coater and had them prep and powder them. Surface rust is no biggy, as long as its prepped correctly, i.e. completely eradicated, prior to painting or powder coating.

cheers,

Ian

One of the best documented threads I prolly ever seen on the boards! Thank you for the post was very cool to see the development. I wish I took more pics of my car during the upgrades over the past year.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all the great replies! Glad to hear that you like the detailed pictures

We have now mounted the engine on the engine stand.

Emptying the oil first.

Removing a mount.

Found a hose in really bad condition. It has to be replaced.

Removing some small hoses and electrical connections.

Removing the intake manifold.

Removing the valve cover.

The camshaft seems to be in a bad condition on this one.

Loosening the head bolts.

The engine block also look a little funky.

It was as we had expected. The engine from the white Porsche 924 that we scrapped had less milage on it so we will proceed with the old motor as it is much less worn.

Preparing the old block.

First removing the engine bearings.

They are in a bad condition.

Took a quick check in the other block to see if they were any better.

But they were also bad.

So we ordered main bearings with original size no oversize.

Now cleaning the engine block before decking!

Preparing the machine!

This is how it looked

VIDEO

We raised the compression from 9.3:1 to 10.7:1 removing 1.5mm.

Looking good

Grinded the edges on the cylinders so that the new piston rings will slide in easily.

Now cleaning the block removing all traces of dirt.

The oil pan received some cleaning too.

Masking the block for engine paint!

Red engine paint

The engine block is now ready! Waiting for new main bearings and piston rings for assembly.

UPDATE

Ok so we got the Glyco main bearings in standard size!

Unfortunately when we were about the assemble we found out that these were incorrect! So we hade to send them back for a refund.

On which car does these bearings even fit?

But we have ordered a new set of main bearings from Germany that should be 100% correct. They said that it will arrive in november so in the mean time we can start going through the braking system.

Is red the correct color for these engines? Not trying to be critical, but I'm used to Ford Blue and Chevy Orange. What's correct for a Porsche? In any case, it looks great!

Red is probably not the correct color but we chose this look

bearings are probably for the block used in the VW/Audi and AMC cars, not the Porsche version of the block which was machined for different sized bearings.

Which is why there was a group buy put together to get new main bearings made for these motors, just not enough people buying them to keep them on the shelf. Rod bolts are unavailable except through Ideola. Rod bearings are available at least.

Very interesting resurrection, thank you for sharing and best of luck with the continued rebuild. Quite a good score for $300, no doubt the wheels and glass are worth more than that. Cool that you're putting her back on the road!
