So my neighbor, after almost year of him watching me put my 924 together says to me,.. "Hey, I got a cousin that owns a Porsche a shop." I said "that's cool, what kinda cars does he work on?". "They are all the older ones,.. 924's, 911, 914's, 70's and 80's" he says. They even build race cars for that era. He brings me to the shop and the guy's cousin was like,.. "I'm interested in hiring you..." I'm like "uhhhh,..."
I really don't know what to say. I've worked in garages before when I was younger. But I got out of it a few years ago when I began programming and developing prototype products for companies on my own. I been able to live off this and not have to get up for a 9-5 in a while, almost 2 years. While I think the pay would be more then I am making now i suspect, it's one of those things where what do I want more,.. the freedom to do what I want when I want to going back to work in a shop, but this isn't just any shop,.. this is a Porsche Shop
Interesting day this was.. Not sure what do do... Would be fun though |

Maybe parttime is an option? 2 or 3 they's in the Porsche-shop, 2-3 where you have your own freedom?
Nice opportunity anyway! Congratulations! _________________ 911SC - 1980 |

That is an interesting option that was given to you.
Thing is if you are happy doing what you are doing, then don't stop. Hobbies are great, being able to make your hobby your job can be great as well.
Gives a nice feeling to be recognized for your talents though. _________________ Cheers;

Unless you are covered another way, ask about medical. That may help you make a decision. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car H-Prod SCCA

I was once offered a similar job in a small shop that did P-cars and the occasional Italian crate, and to this day regret not taking it. My life would have headed off in an altogether different direction, and I still wonder about it.
That said, I also wonder if wrenching on these cars for a living would have taken the fun/magic out of it. Who knows? What I will say is that chances like these don't come along very often, if at all. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

You need to talk to the mechanics that already work there, if they have any. Dealing with someone's 'spensive 911 and accompanying attitude might be a deciding factor! Finger triggers are typically on their lawyer's speed dial. Of course, this is just a generalization! Fella I bought my 911 from in Tucson, a Porsche mechanic/shop owner, complained of the owners as being the most difficult part of his job. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Word, D. A very good friend of mine owns his own shop and we've had some, shall I say 'enlightening' discussions. I still wonder, though, as I'm sure most folks do when looking back at the what-ifs. I don't feel a sense of remorse, just regret. I like to learn about myself, and it would have been a good opportunity for that. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

So I just got back from the shop and talking with the owner. He wants me to come in for an observation day and see if we would be a good match. He's got about 20 911's that need service atm. Most of them are modified with wider tires, body kits etc,..
I got to say guys,.. I really want to thank this board for everything you all done for me. About a year ago, I had a run down 924 I didn't know anything about. You guys walked me through the process of getting it going again and not only that, it was a foot in the door to one of the best shops in LA. Thanks for all your help, it really means a lot to me.
I'll try to take some pics tomorrow |
