Hello, I have a 1980 that regularly drains the battery down. I just bought a nice automotive multi-meter just to test the charging system. The reading between the battery posts is 12.5V with car on, accesories off and it will drain down if lights, wipers, etc. are on. The connection between ground(chassis) and the + post on the ignition coil reads 4.5V with car off 7.5V with car on. I have a haynes manual, but I'm still not sure about what the correct readings should be. Should I remove my alternator to have it tested or can they test them in the car?
Thanks,
Chris

With the ignition off you should have no volts going to the coil.

With the engine running you should have at least 13V preferably 13.5V-14V. If it is less than that check the battery voltage with the engine off it should be about 12.6V If the battert voltage is good check the tension on the alternator belt also check the electrical connections make sure the are tight and free of corrosion. If the belt is good and you can drive the car go to Autozone or another autoparts store that can test the charging system in the car. Hope this helps.
