Logan you can absolutely do it. I know a guy here who turbo'd his 944 with a 944 turbo engine, and the chassis in the 924 and 944 are the same.

The problems might outweigh the benefits however. If the 924 is an early one, you'll have to change tranny, and lots of other stuff. You'll have to get a working 944 brain box, and scores of other hassles. I wouldn't do it. Unless you have more money than God...

If the car is a 924 turbo you won't need to change the transaxle. Only if it is a n/a. The turbo uses the same driveshaft diameter and spline as the 944.

I've heard that the spline and so on DO NOT FIT easily. Modification is required. A friend of mine in Chatham Ontario who posts to this board got stuck with the old "they all fit" line and ended up scrapping the whole thing. I'd check part number for part number before making any rash judgements. It all depends on year, model, etc. Lots 'o' factors.

By the way, I'm not contradicting or trying to contradict PST's remarks. He could well be correct. But the expense of error here is so high that I'm just suggesting measures are appropriate.

Another issue: the 944 NA and turbo engines mount to the front frame members via an aluminum crossmember. In the 924/931, there are more rearward engine mounting points and a different, steel crossmember without engine mounting points.

You can do this swap. It's been done before. The turbo torque tube does fit the 944. I have a 1980 924 turbo transaxle and torque in my 944. As far as the mounts go, all you need to do is locate and drill a hole in the 924 crossmember for each motor mount stud and add a piece of angle to act as a torque stop. The 924 Carrera GT replica with the supercharged 944 engine that has been for sale on the internet started life as a 82 924 turbo. This is how this engine was installed.

I had an e-mail conversation with Jim Pasha a year or two ago about doing the conversion this same way, using a modified 924 steel crossmember. He sounded fairly confident in this method. I am still a little uncertain. To me, the weak link appears to be the two fairly small bolts which serve as the mounting points for the steel crossmember. I don't quite know that I would trust them to handle both loads, supporting the considerable weight of the engine and torque tube as well as stabilizing the suspension.
