|
|
Hi all. I have no idea if and when the pads in my four wheel disc brakes have been replaced; but is it plausible to assume that they may contain asbestos? Also, I have begun tearing out the rear quarter liners in the cabin and they produced a cloud of dust when disturbed. I'm sure this is typical on older vehicles; however, I am curious as to whether Porsche used asbestos specifically in any part of the 924s and Turbos, in the insulation, brakes, or anything else. Does anyone know?? _________________ Dylan Stanford H |

Asbestos went away in brake pads and clutch discs in the '70s. Pad performance in race cars suffered in the early '80s but recovered and got better than ever by the '90s.
Probably no asbestos ever in a toofer.

Sorry to shoot you down but that is not true, asbestos was banned in the 80's then the ban was overturned by the supreme court, many jurisdictions are currently still banning asbestos for use in automobiles and it is still a real problem.
This is something that I had no idea of after spending my college years in auto parts sales.
Osha released an article a few years ago about proper brake and clutch repairs.

| Quote: | | Many brakes and clutches used in new and recent model automobiles do not contain asbestos. However, it has not been totally eliminated. Some reports have indicated that many mechanics and employees in the automotive repair shops as well as do-it-yourselfers are unaware that asbestos may be present in both old and replacement brakes and clutches. |
Edit:
Long and the short of it: Always wear protection, I wouldn't stress about the dust you experienced, I doubt that there was asbestos used in that specific application. However, it never hurts, you don't really know what you are exposing yourself to. _________________ Proud owner of
