What I have is a 1988 CSX-T. They were built for Thrifty Car Rental. They were different from the 1987 in that the stock T1 engine was retained, for durability. The differences from the previous year were 15x6.5 Shelby wheels, and the colors were mainly white with blue and silver trim. There were 1000 built, again with no options. The production line installed T2 intake, turbo, throttle body, intercooler, fuel injectors, and the associated parts; The compressio ratio is at 8.1:1; boost pressure can reach 12 psi. Maximum horsepower is rated at 175 @ 5,300, with torque at 175 lb-ft from 2,200 to 4,800 rpm. The quarter mile came in 15.1 seconds.

Mines just like the white one in the pic.

It runs and is tuned up with a 2.2 l turbo that puts out 175 hp.
I was given a intercooler that was made for the car also.

They aren't that bad, really. I've owned one of the ex-IMSA racing 88's and still own my 87 CSX. Lots of fun for a front driver.

According to the KBB value, those cars are worth upwards of $10K in ideal condition (meaning all of the Shelby items are intact and the car is in showroom condition)

Joe, check out http://www.pnw-sdac.org for some locals that help with parts sourcing, etc. There isn't an active forum, just a mailing list for the local guys. There are more than a few generic Turbo-Dodge forums on the net as well.

BTW, they are routinely given away because no one knows how to repair them properly and few know anything about the Shelby-built models, so they are pretty much abandoned.

Except for the front grill, it looks like the Dodge Shadow turbo I had. Good cars if you take care of them and change the head gasket and t-belt about every 30 to 60 k.

Pretty much spot on. The grill, bumper covers and side skirts were added by Shelby along with the 15x6.5" wheels (factory was only 6") On the CSX-T the engine was left alone for warranty purposes, so it is a standard Shadow Turbo under the hood. Springs, shocks and sway bars were changed. Steering wheel, Shelby boost gauge, dash plaque, door sill plagues and decals were the rest of the additions.

On the Thrifty Rental cars, the Shelby interior parts went missing quite often, usually the numbered dash plagues.

Too bad Chrysler's crack accounting team hadn't pissed Shelby off as the 1990 cars were due to be pretty damned cool (for the time) 2.2L DOHC intercooled turbo, driver adjustable shocks/struts, more aggressive aero, bright blue paint. Most of the Shelby parts used on the Shelby-produced cars were pre-production pieces, so the Chrysler cars received the slightly stronger "factory" parts many times. So the 89 CSX-VNT's engine went into the 1990 Daytona and Shadow VNT. The work on the 90 CSX went on to the Daytona and Spirit R/T.

Of course all of this development work, the Lotus designed DOHC head, the Maserati designed DOHC head (produced by Cosworth for the Maserati TC) the Hans Herman designed DOHC head (used on Shelby's personal GLH-S, which looks surprisingly similar to later German motors) wound up being used on the Neon, Stratus, PT Cruiser, etc. after turbocharging was dropped due to emissions and service costs.

Ha its funny this car is quite a gem .... need to hit deq. before the tags go. Tried to take it to work 2 weeks ago ... though the night before i took it for a spin and got no heat from the heater.... went home popped the hood and refilled the rad only to see it splash out from inder the bat tray. Just replaced the 5/8 coolant hose that was burst today. Then took it out for a nice spin on the full tank of gas i put in 2 weeks ago. This car has some balls and grunt.. all the gears mesh and the clutch is strong
+ new tires on the front. Now the best part, the turbo i love the sound it makes, workin the gear box is alot of fun its quite a sleeper. Im off
work for the holidays since mid week of this week .... bought or am in the process of spending 1400 on my porsche. seats, steering wheel exterior
window squeegees and door rubber, door stops, sunroof rubber, front rotors, steel brake lines, new front tires + alignment, custom door panels.
and me to put it together.... anyone wanna buy this csx make me an offer.

#670 to roll off the assembly line out of 1000.
It even still has the plaque.

I had one of the 1989 CSX-T's with the gold plastic wheels (red with gold wheels like the one on the right of your picture)! T-II intercooled that year though. Very quick little boogers when modded. I also had an '85 Charger with the T-II and 5 speed swapped in from a wrecked Shelby Charger GLHS before that. Very fun!!!

89 would be the CSX-VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo, aka T4) same tq/hp as the 87 2.2 T2 cars, but with a wider tq curve thanks to the quicker spool up. No wastegate as the vanes acted via solenoids to control the boost levels. Neat solution, just didn't leave much room for improvement

The 89+ 2.5L non-intercooled T1 cars made similar torque figures with a tiny Mitsubishi turbo and less overall cost, so the VNT was dropped after 1990 on the options list for the Daytona/Lebaron/Shadow.

In 91, the T3 came along with the DOHC intercooled 2.2 turbo at 224hp using a Lotus-designed head (manufactured by Cosworth)

All of this development eventually lead to the 150hp DOHC non-turbo 2.0L motors in the Neon and eventually the turbo PT and SRT4 with their 2.4L DOHC intercooled turbo motors.

Still wrong wheel drive though

It's hard for me to remember what they all came with stock because I was swapping so many parts out. I do remember pissing off the computer when the variable vane controls couldn't see the stock turbo there anymore after a turbo upgrade. Swapped to the older ECU and was good. I also had one of the later 2.5 Lotus head IROC Daytonas for a short while, but I only did a rebuild/restore of some suspension and steering parts to make some money on it and never hopped it up(other than messing with the stock air bleed to up the boost and add about 40 horse). Good times, even if it's wrong wheel drive.
