Can someone tell me which oil line carries oil to the oil cooler. I beleive that it is the top line.
I want to tap into the line to install an oil temp sensor and I don't want to tap into the oil line that is carrying oil that has already been cooled by the cooler.

Peter, the feed line goes into the circled opening in the oil cooler on this picture link below:

Rut ro.. The parts list shows the lower hose as "(engine to oil cooler)" and the upper hose as "(oil cooler to engine)". The lower hose is lower on both the oil cooler and oil filter adapter - the upper is upper on both.

I am kina confused by that reply. But I have this feeling Im wrong!

I was judging this determination by the picture diagram in the Porsche Technical Reference Catalog? Is the catalog Incorrect?

Also, the picture of the oil cooler I posted is upside down too. The opening I circled in the photo IS actually the LOWER opening (engine to oil cooler)...

According to this Porsche Catalog anyways...

I don't have the book you have. The info I gave is from the Porsche parts catalogue 924 years 1980 - 1985.

It doesn't matter anyway - I just noticed there's a thermostat built into the oil filter adapter to open/close oil flow to the oil cooler. This makes both of those lines not ideal for a temp sensor.

I guess that kind of defeats the purpose then....

Ah yes - that's right, you do actually have the lower one circled, so your info agrees with mine.

So bottom line carries hot oil to cooler and top line carries cold oil to engine --got it.
As for the oil temp sensor, the oil thermostat opens at around 180 F. Below that the oil is just warming up. The temp sensor will tell me how hot above 180F the oil is getting at the track. I plan on using a large oil cooler to be assured of proper oil temp, but you know, a guy can't have enough gauges on his dash.
Below is an excellent site that I have found that gave me more than enough info on oils, their additive packages, proper oil tempo, etc. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Oh yeah, good point - the thermostat is open at the temps you're interested in anyway...

Thinking about their choice to have the oil enter at the bottom of the cooler and exit at the top - It makes sense to do it that way so any air gets pushed out quicker. If it flowed from top to bottom, the oil would be going one way and air bubbles would be wanting to go the other. Maybe not a major consideration, but at least slightly better to flow from bottom to top when you're drawing plans for oil line plumbing.

The best place for an oil temperature sensor is the oil pan.
