Hello- replaced alternator(NEW) + battery(NEW) today with same exact model. after starting her up I gots questions. The old alt would charge around 14 volts but sometimes the needle would bounce around from 14 to 13 back to 14 ect. After installation of new one, volt meter in car reads 12 volts and doesnt move. Im wondering is all ok? 79 snail.... yes ive already cleaned all grounds and added new grounding cables to alt and block to battery. Im wondering if the volt meter is just showing batt volt and not alt voltage. how do I know its working? _________________ 1979 924 N/A Not Fast, but a BLAST to drive. |

i bet it will move if you turn everything on in the car, down to like 10 volts after a few minutes, and then lower and lower. sounds like your alternator is not charging, check all connections and if everything is hooked up and not screwed up, put your old alternator back in because it was working fine before. a little voltage fluctuation is fine especially if it between 13 and 14. _________________ 1977 924 euro spec and no emissions equip |

I've had new alternator that was bad out of the box. No problem getting an exchange. _________________ '78 924 NA with Collector plate

| Easy way to check would be to put a hand voltmeter on the battery without the engine running -- voltage s/b about 12.8. Then start the car. If the alternator is working, the voltage should go to about 13.8 - 14.2 - ish. Otherwise, alternator no workee (make sure you hooked it up right, including the ground strap...) |

Check that the dash alt/batt light comes on with the ignition switched on, but engine not yet started. (If the light doesn't light, either the bulb is burnt or its' wire is broken/disconnected, and the alternator won't be getting the signal to begin charging.) _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Yes my indicator light works when i turn key and goes off after starting. The po used a paris rhome alt- so i replaced with the same. PO definitely made some modifications to the wiring that leads to alt. 2 red wires went to the main post with another red and black leading to harness plug/slot on side of alt. Discovered a electrical tapped up black wire that is hot when car is running that was taped to the white harness and looks like it should connect to the alt based on its location but im not positive. the black wire leads into the white wrapped harness 1/2 way between starter and alt, and this mysto black wire has a ring connector that ends right at alt. Im gonna have a alternator starter friend come over to take a look. Funny thing is old alt worked fine and i hooked new one up EXACTLY the same way. Thats what i get for fixing something that wasnt broke lol. I appreciate all the help this site has so much usefull info. I wish the search function performed better. _________________ 1979 924 N/A Not Fast, but a BLAST to drive. |
