Looking at replacing the stock turbo with an aftermarket unit. I have a new manifold made and will be buying the proper flange shortly.
What do you guys think is the best bang for the buck under $700 (new or slightly used) for a turbo?
I'd like it to be capable of 350 hp. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

What do you mean by a proper turbo?
There *has* to be plenty of options out there for ~300+ hp on small displacement engines...
All the DSM, Honda, and Nissan guys run ~2 liter engines. I know some rev higher but there has to be something out there. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

I think he may be referencing your restrictive budget requirements.
http://himni-racing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=5 for example, starts at 1034.90 dollars at that website.
Before selecting your turbo I would suggest following corky bell's instructions in maximum boost. It gives details on how to select the correct one for your engine size.

Is this a manifold that fits in the typical 931 location or are you relocating the turbo ala 944 turbo? _________________ 1980 Turbo

It will be in the stock location.
I was looking around the website provided in this thread.
I found the gt28rs with the v-band exhaust housing. Very tempting, even at $1200... _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

She'll be pretty tight down in the original location then, but you knew that.
How big of a turbo can you fit dimensionally? I think location will be the limiting factor... but there are loads to choose from from a rice burner to an Audi type KKK turbo. Looks likes your options are unlimited pretty much. _________________ 1980 Turbo

Two reasons I like the idea of v-band tial housing...
1. smaller overall size.
2. less flange between turbo and manifold which means:
a) raise turbo level some for better oil drain
b) easy install/uninstall
The extra $100 for the tial housing plus another $200 for required fittings would be money well spent imo. At least with the research I've done so far.
I'd like to change the turbo location but my motor is out now so it would be tough to build something without the engine in. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

the gt28 is smaller than the K27 for sure...and at 1200...its a steal.
i can get a new one for ~1000 euro here _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Morghen, you're talking smaller physically when comparing to our stock turbo right? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

yes, so you will have more space around it.
i'm planing this swap for the spring.
Going to CAD a flange to mate the 3bolt manifold to the 4bolt gt28rs hot side.
not sure what to do with the stock wastegate as the new turbo has a built in one also. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Holset HX35 from a Ddoge Cummins truck. The 2.3t Ford guys love them. You can ususally find a used one for 350 or less.
Dont know if it will fit in the stock location. _________________ 1994 VW Golf sport rally cross beast

You should be able to get a t3 or t25 exhaust housing without the internal wastegate.
I've never been a fan of internal. Most off the shelf internal wastegated turbos tend to "spike" and then flatten off. Much less consistent than our 930 unit.
I've ridden in a few DSMs with stock/aftermarket turbos, my roommates old srt4, and a few others. All would spike and fall. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Still searching..
I may not go all out with the GT28RS. I was set on spending $1300 on the BB unit but not so sure anymore.
My fabricator says he can do a turbo mani ala Bass GT's design in front of the head, in which case the v-band isn't necessary and I can probably "suffer" with a $800 turbo.
Pains me to go 2 stages (cheap turbo drive it for a summer then go to a BB)... But it would be a boring summer without being able to finish my car and autocross it, and finally do some good lapping/drift days.
I'm still going to use a flange that I can get GT28RS in (t25 or t3) but wont get the actual disco potato until next year. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |
