Hi,
I just bought a 1980 931 and I noticed a slight knock sound from the left side of the car, from, I think, one of the wheels. Any ideas? Haynes doesn't say anything useful, nor the shop manual. Is it possible the parking brake is sticking?

If it's when you're cornering, maybe it's the rear CV joint (if that's what you call it) dwak

My guess is that it's one of the rear wheel bearings, or one of the CV joints. But it is also possible that one of the spring clips that holds the parking brake shoes (or the regular shoes, if this is a non-M471 car) is missing.

Jon,
That's a very interesting hypothesis. I watched while a mechanic, who was inspecting the car for an intercooler, had the parking brake on and hit reverse really hard causing the rear end to rise up real hard (the boob didn't realize that 1st was down, 2nd was up...duh). Then he hit first gear and hit the gas equally hard. He did this in the morning, and the problem was noticed in the afternoon. I'll check on that and the CV's as DWAK pointed out. Thanks.

Rick

Rick, I think you should have hit that mechanic equally hard.
Ciao, dwak

Joint...no parts...labour only...you can reverse them!
