Bad news is, it's a dash cap!

I know what I'm placing my bets on! On the upside, if that dash truly has no cracks, it's probably worth half what you paid for the car. Maybe more?

Seriously, though, was there a fire under that hood..?

Mate, I reckon that's a strip-it-down-to-nuts-and-bolts rebuild you're looking at...

Holy God! Walk away now, that thing is 2 steps away from the crusher. If you're lucky there will be some parts worth salvaging. You are better off saving a bit of money and purchasing one in MUCH better condition.

I repeat... you do not want to continue this doomed endeavor, unless your only hope is to learn about how to work on your next 931.

The other thing. 931s are not a good choice for a student with no money, even with cars in decent condition certain parts can be very pricey and good maintenance will be a requirement, not an option. Restoring one??? Thats a whole nother ball of wax. I wouldn't want to undertake such a financial commitment and I certainly don't consider myself short of money.

I apologize for seeming negative but this project of yours WILL end badly, and you'll have a lot less money in your pockets when its all said and done. Then you'll bite the bullet, put an ad up on craigslist for a non-running-beat-to-hell 931 and hope you get what you paid for it back... but you won't.

This coming from a guy whose name's German translation is "No"

Lololol "No" is telling me "I can't".

I think I'm going to try harder now, thanks.

Its a play on words designed to.... oh forget it. Try harder, yes that sounds like a good plan.

I do sincerely wish you luck.

I have to my two cents in with Nein37. Get out of it while you still can.

We can see you have the best of intentions and you may well have the near superhuman levels of patience and dedication it's going to take to sort that car out. But trust us when we say that's a living nightmare you're walking into. You only paid $700 for the car but if you think it's gonna be equally cheap to restore, you're sadly mistaken. You don't wanna know what it's gonna cost to rebuild that engine, replace the interior, etc. And short of a pure miracle fluke (like finding a parts car with every part you need in near new condition for the same price you paid for that one), it's cost that you can't avoid.

Again, like Nein37, I also sincerely wish you luck. We'll help if we can and I hope you prove both of us wrong!

No offence, but that car looks like it had an under-hood fire, then was pushed into a lake in an attempt to put it out. it seriously needs the kind of love only a mother can give. It's got 3 different kinds of wheels, the engine looks water AND heat damaged, driver's side fender is wrecked, the wiring (well, EVERYTHING) looks pretty nasty under the hood.... Try not to bite off more than you can chew. it's gonna hurt.
My 924 needed a good amount less work than this does when I bought it 6 months ago, and I'm already $1000 into the expected $2500 of the project, and that's one of the cheaper projects I've seen. (my buddy's 924s cost him 6 grand to restore, and it came out of a museum) If you think you can pull it off, more power to ya. If not, you can probably sell it as a parts car for a couple hundred, or you could part it out and MAYBE make your money back if most of the mechanicals are sound.

Good luck with this, buddy. I mean it. if you need any help you're always welcome here.

I don't think it did have an under the hood fire. What little of the underside of the actual hood is clean and white. Also the black on the shock towers looks more like poorly applied black spray paint.......especially on the passenger shock tower in the engine compartment.

As for whether this project is viable......that is a very tough call.....

If you had a 2 car garage and deep pockets, then you could turn this into showroom condition........anything is possible with enough money, time, resources and determination.

But I have to agree this is one of the more challenging projects I've seen.....not impossible mind you......but it will be costly in time and money. Also.....I'm doubtful these cars can be used for primary transportation......a second or third car is possible.......but I'd be afraid to actually rely on one. If you plan to fix it up and use it to get you to school......then I think you will be disappointed.

Now having said that.....I do admire you for buying it. It is a sad day indeed when another of these 931's gets abandoned and hauled off to the crushers. This car has good bones.......but it has been abused and neglected by a long series of owners and there is no doubt about it.......it does need some serious love.

Just keep one thing in mind. You could sink $10,000 into this car to make if a thing of beauty....and then it would be worth $3000......and even then it could cost you $1000 a year in ongoing R&M. As long as you are fine with that knowledge...then go for it. But you'd better really have to love this car before you commit too much time and money to it.

If you really love it, then the time and money doesn't matter. I love the cheacker board back seats.........I have a weakenss for those crazy seats.

Best of luck to you in this project and in your studies.
