|
|
Hey Everyone,
I was thinking of Dyeing the carpet I have now to Black instead of buying a new set of Black carpet. I don't feel 100% confident in doing it yet and will most likely make it a winter project when I store the car.
I was wondering if anyone has done this before and had any advice before I go for it.
Thanks,
~Alex
P.S. I will post before and after pics when I get done with the project! _________________ 79' 924 Gorilla Mobile |

I dyed my carpets. Nothing to it really. Just point and shoot. I was using a hvlp gun, but I'm sure a rattle can will do just as good. It does make the carpet a little stiff once it dries, but after you run your hand over it a few times it softens back up. _________________ 1980 924 NA

Cheapest and easiest fix is to buy Rit dye at your local supermarket or drug store. Works well and will not get the rug stiff.
I have used it on the rear hatch rug. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I did the rit dye.... 4 years later it will still rub off on your cloths and shoes.
My plans are to haul them out and put new or really good used. _________________ 1976 924

OK, so RIT dye would not be a good idea then if it's going to rub off on clothes. _________________ 79' 924 Gorilla Mobile |

Wear black shoes.
I don't think you will have a problem if you follow directions.
I suspect that it comes off if you get it wet via a leak. For the $.50 I would try it. Cheapest fix on this entire site. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Sorry about huge pics, I'll get it right next time. If you want to back up though just press Ctrl and - to zoom out. You will be able to them fully that way. _________________ 79' 924 Gorilla Mobile |

Why not use something that won't rub off on your clothes ever, even when wet? It's not even that expensive. http://www.leathermagic.com/Pages/carpetdyekit.htm
RIT is made to dye natural fibers and won't penetrate the synthetic material of the carpet. It basically just sits on the surface waiting to be wipes off. I've tried it before and will never use RIT again unless it's to dye cotton.
I've also used Duplicolor Vinyl/Upholstery paint. It wears off eventually, but doesn't wipe off like the RIT does. The way to keep it from getting stiff is to brush it after it dries. _________________ '80 924 Turbo - SOLD!

Actually, I did use Leather Magic dye. It has been good so far but I've needed to comb the rug with a brush to get the stiffness out. _________________ 79' 924 Gorilla Mobile |

RIT says right on the package that it is useful for nylon, among other materials. I've used RIT many times in the past to dye nylon plastic parts, rather than nylon fabric. It's worked great for me dying nylon plastic. _________________ 78 924 NA
