I really enjoy driving my 924s..it is one of the best purchases I have made...anyway

I was driving the other day, and this punk in a an escort is riding my bumber on this two lane road. I sped up about 5 mph and he stayed on my bumper. On this particular road there is a 90 degree turn that the Porsche will easily take a 50 plus...so I took it at 45, 10 over the speedlimit, I didn't tap my brakes or anything just drove in and out of it. Well you guessed it the Punk was in the dirt....

Yesterday, I was driving home from the gym and a dude in a Ford fusion was tailgating me, another road with multiple turns, again didn't tap the brakes at all, actually this time I accelerated away from him a little, and then hit the turn...you guessed it...he was in the dirt...when I looked in my rear view mirror.

My car mybe 22 years old...but it will still out drive those cars...what is it with these Ford drivers anyway. I bet they think twice about tailgating a Porsche.

I get it all the time in the Elise, I slow down and let them past.
I have nothing to prove - I can out drag a 1.6 shopping trolley if I want to.
I just don't want to be there at the accident when they run out of skill...

Rich, I love that picture.

jrrhdmust, Thats pretty good of you to intentionally wreck those guys (even if you never touched them). I understand that they get on your nerves but be the better man and let them go wreck them selves or figure out a way to challenge them to a lap of a track somewhere.

I'm not trying to bash here I think they got what they deserve for not knowing their cars but you knew.

I don't see how it's his fault in any way that the other guys ended up in the dirt? Or how jrrhdmust "knew" it would pan out that way...? They were the ones being d1cks from the sound of it, and deserved what they got...

It's tough to guess what your tailgater wants -
1- They're tailgating because they want to go faster - not correct (unless you're under the speed limit), but you might choose to accomodate them by speeding up a bit. -And obviously in this case if they can't stay on the road, that's a problem, but not for you.
2- Maybe they're tailgating because they just like to tailgate. Again, it's tough to guess what they want, but this could be it. -So you coast down a bit to make the tailgating both easier and safer for them.
3- They might be tailgating to let you know in a twisted way that you're going too fast (some type of citizen cop mentality). I'm usually at 5-9 mph over the posted limit, so there's really no good reason for anyone to tailgate unless they want me to slow down to the speed limit, and I normally do. Plus it might be an actual cop behind clocking you, so slowing down to the limit is the correct move in either of these cases.
4- They're just being themselves, and that happens to be some sort of pushy manipulative control-freak, and they see you as just another target on their daily rounds to test - to see if they can manipulate you into going faster for them. In this case, coasting down (no brakes) to exactly match and hold the speed limit is called for. Some (basically decent types that just have a habit of speeding through that stretch) will realize that the manipulation game doesn't work on you, will drift back to a reasonable following distance and behave themselves - at which point you can gradually resume your "normal" speed. Other more ballsy types will pass - that's fine, see ya later (usually at the next traffic light, sometimes at the side of the road recieving a summons), and others who've blasted off to hyperspace you won't see, but they're getting/gotten their summons or other just desserts somewhere.
Key to most of this is coasting back to the speed limit rather than braking, which turns on the bright red lights. The red lights can throw a switch in a real kooks brain and lead to more irrational behaviour than is called for. Coasting without the red lights leaves them slightly confused for a moment thinking, "Weren't we moving a little faster just a moment ago? Hmmm, I think we were..weren't we?..", and has a somewhat calming affect. -Or in other words, the brake lights make it obvious that you're responding to their tailgating with an eff you of your own, and affirms your joining in on the confrontation. While no brakes (and not even acknowledgement of their presence by obvious repeated glances in a rearview mirror, or other tell), leaves you seperate from any potential confrontation, and has the more calming effect..

Smothie is quite correct coasting is the textbook answer, however if your lights are on, floor it but hit the foglamps.

They get 2 massive bright reds, slam on the anchors as they are too close assume they are brakelights and you pull away from them.... That'll confuse them

/Warning/
you may cause accidents/get shot/beaten up/etc

I always slow down put my hand out the window and signal them to pass me....i hate the idiots that think that they could go so much faster if you were not infront of them.
this is a proven fact...i'm always overall faster by sticking close to the legal limit....just a little over it...just shy of a ticket

+1

I'd like to think that I'm a pretty responsible driver, but people that get behind me just can't seem to keep their cars straight... I've even had two guys that were driving ahead of me on separate occasions wreck while trying to get me race, but I wouldn't...

I can think of no other explanation; I own a car that makes other drivers act crazy

If its a two lane road i will move to the other lane....Im not gonna get a speeding ticket for anyone

Funny story
A few months ago got tailgaited by a Young male driver (18-21) and his two drunken male passengers , they decided to pull up next to me at the lights...to see who exactly they were tailgating and no doubt hurle insults at me......upon pulling up next to me i asked them if they wanted to all get out of the car so we could all sort it out under the streetlights... Never seen a 4wd accelerate through a red light so fast in my life!

Its amazing how tough people are when theyre sitting in their car.

Nice one Scorp!

I had a guy tailgate me a while back, then blast past me over double lines. I gave him the finger as he tore off into the sunset, only to find him out of his car and in the middle of the f*cking road on a blind corner a km or so down the road. If there had been cars coming the other way I would have had little choice but to run the prick over. As it was the crazy f*cker ran after me as I pulled across to miss turning him into a hood ornament...

Some people should seriously be locked up.

Quite awhile ago, i actually installed a surplus aircraft landing light in one of my cars, for bright lighters and tailgaters. when i hit the switch, it was instant daylight behind me. but ofcourse it only worked effectively at night, and i was i was afraid i was going to fry my electricals so i removed it.

ive got a bad habit of brake checking tailgaters, but im getting better at just coasting down ...
