just the last couple days my 924 has been backfiring horribly when I let off the gas, it has never done this before and I would like to fix it because it sounds bad!

And I am still having a warm start problem, when it sits it seems to get flooded while engine is still warm and takes about 6 tries to start it, sometimes more and I have already been through 2 batteries
drained from this problem. Really gets annoying!

P.S.- Does anyone else think Brad Wrights 78 924 on the main page is ugly? I think the chrome trim needs to be painted black, it needs a hatch with a spoiler, needs some custom 16 inch wheels with low profile tires and the windows tinted or something, it's just too stock for me, 924's look very ugly stock if you ask me!

The hole point to that car is that it is stock, the way it left the factory,
not distroyed by years of hotrodding and abuse, it is a very good
example of a original 924, and does not deserve to be cut up to look
like a newer car that it is not, if I want the look of a newer or faster
Porsche I will drive one of my other Porsches. Brad

I agree with Brad - nothing looks better than an original, well-preserved 924. The clean original styling of the 924 is by far superior to those ugly add-on spoiler kits that were popular during the 80s. In fact, I would even say that due to this the 924 looks more modern today than the 944. This is of course my own humble opinion, but I am going to keep my car the way God and Porsche intended... ;-)

William,

About your starting/backfiring problem:

Incorrect ignition timing may cause starting problems as well as backfiring. However, unless you have changed the ignition timing lately, it shouldn't suddenly change by itself (the bolt by the distributor should be tight). It doesn't hurt to have the timing checked, though.

I agree with Brad & Fredik. re both the appearance and the problem.

First the problem: There are a bunch of things which you need to ensure. Timing first. What year is your car? Is the control CIS system holding pressure? Warm start control pressure reduction working? Cold start valve leaking? It's an old car. I suggest you go through the tuneup and CIS checking procedures as per Haynes Manual.

Second appearance: I also like the appearance of a clean stock 924. And Brad is correct - that is the beauty of his car and why it is on the 'cover'. But; I also admire the appearance of some of the other styles and they also have been featured on the cover: GT, DPs, etc. I do not even compare the two as they are apples and oranges. Each has its own appeal but they are not one better or better looking than the other in my opinion as they are totally different styles.

I will go out on a limb here and say that I really do not like oversized spoilers. An example I have seen is a large (951?) spoiler I have seen on a 924. The body is too narrow and the spoiler which looked aggressive on the wider 951 just looks silly on the 924. But, if it works on the track then it serves a purpose.

I had the same thing with my 77 euro market 924 when I first got it. It was the warm up regulator in my case. You should also look into your cold start valve. It is like a fifth fuel injector, sprays fuel into the intake on cold starts. It could be leaking just like a standard injector.

As for the backfiring, that is when the fuel is not burned in the cylinder. The bang you hear is from the fuel burnning in the exhaust system. That is in the ignition system. The plugs gould be bad from the hard starts. That is what happened to me. it could be anything in the system other then that. Time to look at you cap and and roto. Your wires could be bad our it's time for a new ignition it's self. I put the permatune+coil system in my car and it is great. Trust me, if you don't want to go nuts stay away from the Jacobs system!!!

As for the look of a 924 I feel that it's up to you how you want your car. I like it when they look stock for the most part. I would like to put the fifteen inch spider Porsche wheels on my car. "If you have a set I will buy them from you" Or you have a Honda with the big wheels and the bad exhaust tip.

Pat
