|

Hello everybody. I'm new to the forum, but have been an avid Porsche follower for quite a while.
I recently fell upon a seemingly good 931. I do have an 87' 924s so I have some sort of a foundation with these front engine cars.
The point? I was wanting to get some specific feedback from some of the Porsche elders(and young-folk like myself, of course) who know more than I do about them.
For the most part: are parts available somewhat easily? Reliable? -and how different would it be from my 924, which is all original, minus a rigged 57' Chevy muffler and an after-market air filter? I do appreciate the input from everybody!

Some people say 931 is not a reliable sports car. This could be the case if the car has been neglected. Cheating with scheduled services will bring problems, this is common sense. And because these are old cars, there might be some problems due to their age.
I have a quite nice 931 that has a service history starting from 1982. Lots of bills and papers. Still I have had some issues, for example the famous WUR problem, vacuum leaks etc.
Today this car is working very well. I use it as a daily driver everyday. I even drove it from Sweden to Finland, which was quite a long road trip.
It starts with a turn of a key and then drives nicely, even fast.
It has passed inspections right ahead, also with good emissions. When the 931 is taken care of, it is a very good and reliable car. And fun too! _________________ Mikko

you will find the 931 has a very different feel to it than the 924S, where the 924S very smooth and forgiving, the 931 is more of a bulldog, and will require more effort, but in a good way. you will not have the power steering, and you will have the turbo kick, a bit more of a drivers car imo.
most parts are still available and allot of interchangeability with all others of the series. some engine internal parts are difficult to find, and a few are NLA, but weve been working here for solutions and alternatives, and i have no doubt that they will be forthcoming.
issues specific to the 931 can be turbo seals , mostly due to inadequate oil cooling after running hard (let it run for a few minutes before shutdown), a few hard to reach hoses (oil return lines) that suffer due to lack of maintenance, and the usual array of prior owner shortcuts and backyard "solutions" that werent well thought out.
there are differences between the early and late 931's as well, late models (S2's) have DITC ignition, smaller turbos, different charge tubes and throttle bodies, etc. s2 cars have higher hp ratings and are a bit more efficient, over the s1 cars.
i think that covers the basics, let us know what you decide, welcome aboard! _________________ Eric

Thanks for the opinions! Based on the way he(The seller) describes it, and the way it looks from the pic he sent me.. the car is pretty solid.
From the Seller:
"Runs strong. Lots of new parts. New Tires, Fuel Distributor, injectors, rebuilt turbo. Also have (not installed) new High Performance cam, spare turbo, extra 5 speed transmission, extra nice door panels, any many more miscellaneous parts. Interior is in great shape just needs new rugs. Front seat newly upholstered. All instruments work. Has the racing 5 speed transaxle. Comes with lots of extras like, original car manual, complete workshop service manual from Porsche, tool kit, 1st aid kit, good workable rear deck sun (privacy) shade, proper jack and spare, etc. Does need paint and engine smokes from bad seal on rebuilt turbo. I have most of the documents from parts and service. Over $10,000.00 invested."
all for a mere asking price of $2800.
Sounds good, I've decided to procrastinate a week or two before a make any decisions. I have been riding one fella awfully hard for a ?1972? Triumph tr6, and he has recently called a few times mentioning that he is thinking of selling. I know, I know.. Triumph.. Its no Porsche by any means, but Triumphs' hold a special place in my heart, haha. |

Price sounds a bit high to me, I don't think he will get it.
Are you a good and willing mechanic? _________________ Toofah King Bad

I agree that the price sounds high. I was going to limit myself to $2400 being the highest.(Thats really all I could afford to spend anyways) Whether he would go that low is in question.
My mechanic skills are alright. I'm very willing. I research, research, and research before I actually start anything though.. you know.. to get some idea of what to do and not to do. I don't get [to]awfully frustrated with stuff. |

It looks like he has about $400 plus in extras that go with the car. I would offer 2k and see where it goes.
Lots of very good opinions in this thread. My 2 cents....the 931 you will get to know intimately...in record time. Yes, they are more of a bulldog compared to a 942S...and they need lots of attention. Is it worth it ? Just wait until that turbo kicks in...then try to wipe the smile off your face. _________________ Matt
