Does the nasty opaque brownish-orange color of 30 year old coolant reservoirs bug anyone besides me? Aside from buying a new replacement or the $$$$pendy aluminum unit from Lindsey Racing, does anyone have any tricks for refurbishing, reconditioning, or restoring the coolant reservoir so it doesn't look so crappei?

You can try painting it white, just put a small vertical piece of masking tape on the front before spraying so you can see the coolant level.

I've still got mine if you want it. I'll check the condition of it this morning.

I have a couple of 944 units, both badly discolored. The one in the NA is that way, the stock 931 unit in the 941 is that way, and the one in the 924S is that way too. They all look like crap. I was hoping for something less expensive than ~$100 for a new one, especially if it's going to end up suffering the same fate.

My plan is to convert the 941 and the UWB over to 944 units. On the 944 units, you could paint the whole thing except for the top (which is where you visually monitor coolant level), but I'm wondering how well the paint would adhere to that material? Wouldn't want it to get scratched or chipped off, as then it would look worse than before.

its one of my pet peeves as well...since the yellowing is the result of a chemical reaction, im guessing that heat is the culprit, its not something that can be cleaned off... the only thing i can think of it it might be possible to DYE it back to white, rather than paint, but itll probably result in loosing the translucent qualities as well.. maybe some sort of plastic dye if such a thing exists. rit dye might work as well, if they make it in white.. or shoe polish???

Hey, what is wrong with yellow plastic? It is not yellow snow.

Mine is yellow and I don't care. They all turn that color after a while.

Thats funny, i was looking at autohaus for the same part for my 4/77 NA, but they dont have it.Checked also for a VW K70 (where the same part is used) but its not listed.

A friend told me he put some degreasing fluid in it and put it inside some old cloth, then into the washing machine (HOT) and it looks way better then........?

PS: Does anybody know the porsche part price?

In particular, on the UWB project, everything else is going to be powder-coated, painted, new, or otherwise sparkly. Except for the d*** coolant reservoir. Don't want anybody busting my chops over that like they did the brake booster when I dressed up the 924 NA engine bay!

Run some masking tape lengthwise where you want the level indicator to be, maybe a foot long, paint the rest.

There 'was' a really sharp new looking tank on eBay a few weeks back. It might happen again before your project is complete.

Performance Products has them in their latest catalog but more expensive; around $90 IIRC.

If you're that concerned you can get an aluminum 944 tank from Lindsey.
