Professor Hinkley?! Is that you? Very good to hear you finally made it back from the island.
Another trick to try when dealing with the little plastic odo gear is wire reinforcement. I cut a slight recess around for the wire to fit in and glued, then wrapped wire from a twist-tie once or twice around and twisted, cut, pressed the end down, - so the gear's both glued and wire-wrapped. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Sounds like fun and games on a cold night, guess summer is well over now.
Expect you have the 17 tooth red gear. Hope it hangs together but if not they are available at kLA Industries for $30 new or I have a good S/H one for $10.

That's the one, 17 teeth. I opened up a VDO speedo from a VW found the same gear but it was broken too! I think it's just a poor design. The teeth should run the full height of the gear IMO (shouldn't have a shoulder). Somebody could make some real money making a better gear!
Here's the gear with the spacer I made:
It didn't hold together, but the spacer worked anyway to keep the thing from moving down.
Thanks for the offer for the gear, but I think I'll keep screwing around with it until I have a ready-for-prime-time solution.
By the way, here's the easy way to reset your odometer:
Installed, zeroed, seems to be functioning but we'll see how it lasts
