Hey Folks!
I just picked up the 931 from the shop. Finally quelling my burning oil troubles for good. We kept the AA pistons (cheap 88mm VW flattops) but traded the old cheap rings - which were the root of the trouble - with a set from Total Seal that were made-to-order with a nitrile coated top ring. When the mech opened up the engine, the ring gap was about 4x what I filed them to. The cheap supplied rings just couldn't take a turbo environment at all.
He found that the turbo had some play too, which was odd considering there were only around 200 miles tops since I had it rebuilt by a local shop. We sent it off to Majestic and they rebuilt it + upgraded the cold side. I'm still getting the details, but I think it's just an upgraded compressor wheel, machined housing, and the whole thing is extrude-honed. It looks cool
I just rode home and it isn't pulling as hard as before, but I'm pretty sure the timing is retarded by a good bit. The mech couldn't get his laptop to talk to the MegaSquirt, which does admittedly take a little effort. The air/fuel looked decent on my drive home but there is some surge once the boost kicks in - set to a conservative 10psi at the moment.
I have lots of tinkering to do before we head over to the dyno for fine-tuning and a power pull. First on the list is a howling front wheel bearing, and then to replace my question fuel lines with some good EFI stuff and/or -an lines. At least the smoke, that's been plaguing me is now forever a bad memory.
First things first, it's time for a favorite pour from my cabinet before pulling out the wrenches. Cheers!

Congrats, Nick. I'm glad to hear that you are back on the road with a 931 instead of a mosquito sprayer. Good to see you back on the forum.
Cheers to you, Brian |
