I know that some here on the board warned me not to but I just could not pass it up. The 931 needs about 6 months and about 2 k in work but thats sort of what I was looking for. It is a 1980 model with the m471 option aka all wheel disc brakes and uprated suspension. I will let you all know what kind of gremlins I find considering its a $500 dollar car. Worst case scenario I end up parting the car out to get my money back. We shall see

I will keep everyone posted. First thing first is to clean clean and clean some more. I plan on doing a compression check before going any further.

Alright guys

This is the first of many updates. The general condition of the car is as to be expected of one that has sat out in the weather for ten years. All the window seals are shot the paint is oxidized and possibly shot. No biggie. The driver doors upper hinge mount is cracked and needs to be welded. I still have not decide what to do about this problem. There is a sub structure that the mount was originally welded to but to re weld that the mount will have to come off. I will let you all know what the verdict on that is. I still have yet to do a compression check but plan to this weekend. I removed the fuel distribution block and intake. Lots of cobwebs and snail shells. Don't ask. Pretty much anything rubber under the hood needs replacement. Again no biggie. Most of the hose can be got at local hardware/autoparts store. The PO replaced the fuel pump relay with the el cheapo so there is eighty bucks out the window. The bottom line is as bad as it sounds I think the car is still worth saving. If the compression check is good then the first order of business is to get the motor running. The cosmetics can wait I have a garage to store her in and if it takes months to fix her up so be it.

I had the busted hinge on my 79. . .it is a common failure, so a good body shop can weld it up cheaply.

So I did a compression check on the motor tonight. I am not sure if these numbers really mean anything because the engine was cold. Before anyone starts I know you should warm the engine up before a compression test but since this engine does not run at the moment this is the best I can do.

Here are the numbers

#1. 120 psi
#2. 120 psi
#3. 140 psi
#4. 140 psi

The difference between cylinders 1,2 and 3,4 has me alittle concerned about the condition of the head gasket. I will probably do the test again just to double check the numbers again. Anyway thats what I have for now.

Those numbers are good. Look here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=18382
My last post there on Mar 12, 2006 5:05 am gives results of tests I did then on a warm engine, with throttle closed, then open, pre- and post cylinder cleaning.

Update

After some lengthy troubleshooting I found that both fuel pumps are shot. I am hoping that once I drain off the 10 year old fuel and remove the pumps I can possible clean them. I am getting a locked rotor type of failure (I.E. dead short to ground). The P.O. for some reason went through and disconnected most of the o2 sensor system. Luckly he did not cut it out. The switches under the throttle body were adjusted out so that they did not make contact. The o2 sensor was disconnected and tied up. I have seen evidence of an oil leak somewhere near the turbo but seeing as the intake system had a lot of oil in it this may just be 20 years of oil residue. Fingers crossed. I ordered a gang of stuff from Automobile Atlanta. I hope to see that stuff this week. I figure at this rate I may be ready to actually start the car next month sometime, baring some major malfunction. I will keep the updates coming

AA would not be my first choice as a supplier. Try Pelican Parts, The Parts Bin, EBS Racing, or Performance Products.

From what I've read on this 'board over time, Automobile Atlanta are a bit of a mixed bag...

well had another set back today. The po left a whole tank of fuel in the car for ten years. As I started to drain the tank I realized that I had never seen or smelled fuel that old before. It was like piss yellow. This lead to both pumps being gummed up and therefore BAD. Oh well just another thing to add to the list of stuff to fix. I set the engine for the correct timing and found the the po had incorrectly installed the spark plug wires. It never ceases to amaze me how cheap people can be when it comes to there cars. I just don't understand why people with little to no mechanical abiility buy cars that are maintenance intensive. I have always had a no expense spared mentality, but I do my own maintenance. Thats why my last two vehicles had over 200,000 miles on them when I finally retired them. I am not discouraged just yet but anymore set backs like this and she is a parts bitch. I bought the microfiche manuals and plan to have them put to paper or cd. If it works out I would be happy to share with those that don't have them. Porsches rule

Well I purchased my fuel pumps today. I don't know where on the board I saw it but I called Sap Usa. $251.00 USD for both pumps and shipping. I could not believe it. So to whom ever found this source thank you very much and also if you need a pump call these guys up. Phone # 305-594-2844. Now for the not so nice news. I bought what I thought was the factory manual on microfiche off of ebay. What I got was the supplement for the 924 turbo. Now the seller is acting shaddy about giving my money back. What an idiot I am and what an SOB he is. Live and learn right. Automobile Atlanta told me today that they sell the full factory service manual on cd for $45.00 however when I went to order it I was told they could not find it. Jason the rep told me they would have a new copy in a month or so, we shall see. I still have to figure out what to do with 15 gallons of bad fuel. I was thinking of just lighting it all off in my back yard. What do you think? I could save it till July 4th.
