well i'd like to say "hi" as i'm new to the boards. i was actually directed this way by some of the guys over at pelican parts for my questions on a 931.

i recently found one here localy (that i'm hoping to go test drive and check out this weekend) for a $1600. its a 1979 4 lug car, from what i have seen so far very clean car, black and silver paint no body damage, black leather interior in good shape and a claimed 80 some thousand original miles.

anyway i actually use to drive a 944 so i know a few things to look out for but since this is an ealier car and completely differant under the skin what should i look for? i'm going to see if i can get any records on the car or if it was taken to any of the local dealers i know and see what they have to say about the car.

thanks in advance for any help.

Mostly the usual car check-out stuff - look for good accelleration and sure braking without odd noises. Sounds that indicate things are working properly on a 924 turbo are a fairly loud click each time you let off the throttle and the turbo whining sound on accelleration. The wastegate and turbo generally need service at 5-10 year intervals, so try to find when they were last rebuilt/replaced. The engine is an interferance design, so you have to keep on top of that and change it [the timing belt] approx. every 2-3 years. It's not as big a deal to do as on a 944 and requires only about $25 in parts (the belt + tensioning pulley).

No way! I thought there was something wrong with mine! I always wondered what that click was...

Yes that click is a good one. If you don't hear it, something's wrong. It's the sound made by the turbos' bypass valve - when you let off the throttle, vacuum rises, shoots down that big vacuum line from intake runner 1 to the bypass valve and pulls it open - "click".

Dangit, no clicky on mine...just a big BOV "woosh" with the K&N intake system on there.

help this guy out . . . http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?p=126021
if you wanna spend $1600, help a fellow board member out and get two cars for that price.

. . . and you're not that far from him (just a thought).

A recording of the popoff valve - with mics placed below* the pov, operating the throttle from the engine compartment.. It clicks on both opening and closing the throttle (287 KB) -

* - You should hear it just as well from above the engine.

Yep, mine clicks. You can hear it very clearly from the drivers seat if the door or window is open.

Well, I have had three different turbo's in mine over the years, and have never heard a click.

If it's the standard K26 with the recirculating bypass valve then the easiest way to hear the clack/click is to just pop the bonnet while the car is idling, then rev the car on and off by hand at the throttle body. You should be able to hear the valve opening and closing, making the 'clacking' or 'clicking' noise.

I have always heard the click. After 185,000 miles the head gasket blew. I am sure the turbo is original as I have all the service records. Mobil one must be good. I really miss my 931.
