I've seen aftermarket wastegates a.k.a. diverter valves for sale, and I wonder if a 931 wastegate with a blown diaphragm might better be replaced by an aftermarket unit than rebuilt. Any experience would be helpful, with a special eye on cost.

pondering the same thing myself, especailly since wy wastegate is currently sitting on my garage floor.. im still waiitng on prices, but it looks like its going to cost about $150-$200 to replace the diaphram and upgrade to a 1 bar 930 boost spring, doing the work myself..from what i gather so far, an aftermarket w/g is going cost about twice that, and would still need modification and custom pipe work to fit, but im not sure.. but if thats the case, rebuilding the factory part seems the better option..I cant really see the sense in investing $300-$500 for what is in effect, a pressure bleedoff valve (and i think its silly that the diaphram alone is over $100 for the stock part)
the aftermarket ones look pretty, but then again, their tucked so far up under the car, pretty doesnt matter.....
some hard info on this would be helpfull though..

Some parts I buy from my Porsche dealer.

Eric give me a list and part numbers of parts and I will check the cost at Silver Star.

You can get one of the gaskets from ThePartsBin.com. The other parts are dealer only, so far.

Look out guys, I am reading a bunch of old threads, and am likely to revive some crusty ones.

Guy's,

trust me, the stock item is perfect. Don't forget, it's a 911 turbo unit. As long as it is in good order, stick with it. And it is ready to run in dual port mode straight away. A Tial dual port WG is $$$$ and of no benefit. Trust me onthis one, i think i know....

might want to look at the time stamp on that post Leigh,

although I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and it will be awhile before he gets back to his 931 project, as he is going through a divorce.

When I rebuilt my turbo and wastegate I went shopping for 'gates to a number of different reputable turbo shops. They didnt know the car too well so I bought in the wastegate and everyone of them said something to the effect of "no way, stick with the gate you have, that is better than anything you will be able to buy from us".

I think someone has already mentioned that it is the same wastegate as a number of other famous turbo porsches, 933 maybe?

It's the same wastegate as 930's have, the code is the same also.
Stock unit is fine with it's 38mm valve and good healthy spring (and dual-port capability as Steve pointed out).
I will use it even when i'll be fabricating my own custom exaust manifold somewhere in the future.

Don't forget that 951 has really crappy wg, that's why they upgrade it to Tial or if one hasn't got money to throw, an Audi unit is actually very good wastegate too.

i stuck with the stock w/g and upgraded to the 1 bar spring, works great, just have to go easy as even with a dial boost control cranked way down, i can still hit the overboost cutout rather quickly. im expecting more drivable results when i get the intercooler project finished though. i will say that it when it hits, it hits hard, and its basically the definiton of seat sucking power, but real easy to blow things up too, so i wouldnt recommend doing it without an i/c or a strong desire to make your powerplant go boom
