O.K. I replaced the starter and the car starts wonderfully (with a full battery), but now the alternator light stays on and the battery drains. Obviously not charging. What did I knock loose? The mounts are shot, but I wouldn't think that would cause the problem. The ground appears to be alright, oh on occasion when I start up the car I get a sound like having a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. I shut the car off and restart it the sound goes away. What's up now. I have had this car for over 4 years and have had no problems with the exception of the fuel pump. I am now understanding some of the frustrations that some of you have or are feeling with your cars.
Thanks for the help.

Well since they both share the same harness, did you make sure you are connected properly at the starter? There are numbered terminals on the starter 15, 30 ,...can`t remember....anyways, if these are connected right, and are tight, there may be a problem in the harness itself. These are known to go dry and brittle over time because of where its located.
Since you`ve been in there, its possible something got stretched and broken. You can also pull the air scoop off the back of the alt., and check your connections in there.
But do the ovbious first and make sure the belt is tight....or not missing... |

I feel your pain.
Re-check the ground wire..
Or do a temporary ground to see if the battery stops draining. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

Update, I went out and got a temp ground wire with no luck, exciter wire no luck, and all appears well with the wires to the starter. So I took off the alternator and took it up to advanced auto and had them bench test it and nothing (the base tested it while it was still in the car). So once again I am down awaiting parts. I also ordered new bracket bushings from automotion, a little pricey but the only place I was able to find that sold them. I will let you know what happens when I put her back together.

I had this exact issue on my car...
It LOOKS like the two red cables should go to seperate posts on the starter solenoid, but in fact they both connect to one terminal. On my 931, this was the top terminal. The other terminal looks like it has no connection, but it in fact does have a connection to the starter.
Try connection both red cables to the one terminal, and the other terminal should have a cable going into the starter. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

????
I put the cables on the starter in the same location they came off. 1 was red with a line (black I think) that went to the # 50 terminal 1 was brownish that went to the #15 teminal and a third (black I think) larger than the others (ground?) went to the top of the solenoid. Am I missing a wire?
