so im having my coffee this morning and reading the local paper, as usual..and an add catches my eye...NO, I dont WANT another car (yes i do, i always do) , NO I cant afford another car (that much is true..) But the price, oh my god, can this be??? (no way i tell myself, cant be right) i just had to call... I find out the guy is three blocks away from me..oye..well, cant hurt to look can it? so i did...
engine is blown, probably a bad head gasket...but complete
fairly new ansa exhaust, recent front end service (not that it matters now with the blown head gasket) , mostly new a/c system, test pipe, secondary tranny cooler (auto) , lots of other stuff...
interior is shot, and i do mean shot...
body is overall in nice shape, far from perfect but not horrible..
wheels, man, thats what got me.. chromed flat dish, 16x8 all around (best i can tell) and tires are like new...
lots of records ...
the guy was willing to take a check (no one takes checks anymore, that was my last defence) AND help me tow it home the few blocks and push it into the garage..
Now, what to do with it.. ???? At the moment, its out of my league as far as fixin goes..but im thinking those wheels will look really nice on my Carrera conversion , and maybe next summer i can toy with repairing it..but for now, its a parts car for my 931.... and no, im not parting it out, not yet , to soon to make that decision..im also not telling how much i paid, but be sure, it was probably less than those wheels alone would go for...

Sounds like a good move Eric.
Looks pretty nice.
I think those wheels are as nice as the trash cans get.

Looks nice, I'm jealous. From what I understand, I hope you have deep pockets and a fat checkbook. But, how do you figure a 928 is a parts car for your 931? _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

well it does look nice that is for sure, I am guessing 78/79, w/ a 3 speed,
personally I would NOT part it out, if all it has is a blown head gasket pop off the heads and replace the gasket, if the timing belt has broken THEN you might consider parting it out, and there are NOT many parts that you can use on the 931, e-brake handle, seats, rims MAYBE as the 928 has a huge offset and those will probably be 7" wide.
the suspension and brake parts cannot be used on the 931, the 928 is COMPLETELY different in that regard. _________________ 3 928s, |

thanks guys... i appreciate the encouraging words ..
im hoping to be able to use the wheels on the 931 (once i have the gt kit on) , and a couple of other tidbits , well see how it goes. I call it "parts" so i dont upset my 931, which has been so good to me lately and gotten me to and from work over 50 miles each way for the past few weeks. I know at least some of you talk to your cars, dont want mine to think shes being replaced...
Its an 82, with the auto.. id of prefered a 78/79 with a manual, but im not complaining..According to the guy i just picked it up from, he blew a heater hose on the way home from work, made it home but overheated it, which killed one of the head gaskets, so i wouldnt think theres a belt issue, or valves destroyed. At some point, ill probably crack it open and see what damage has been done, but itll be awhile. ill decide then if i think its worth saving.the entire interior will need to redone as well, but i can do most of tthat on my own (i have a thing about ratty interiors, cant drive a car that way.) its got a dent in the rear quarter that i didnt notice earlier, not bad though..otherwise i think it "looks" worse than it is... i was exploring the car a bit and also found most of the factory tool kit, missing one piece, i thought that was neat..ill havent put much thought beyond that though..i know itll cost a bunch if i decide to fix it, and my cash cow is very sick at the moment, but im hopeing itll get better in a couple of months..but the up side is that theres no hurry... im fairly sure i could double, if not tripple what i paid for it without even touching it, and fairly quickly if need be....so for once, i might of gotten just a little break, and im glad for it. at the very least i will break even even if i keep the wheels, and i cant ask for more than that.. .. _________________ Eric

Sounds like a good buy. Just as a reference. I purchased my 1987 928S4 chrome flat dish alloys with brand new goodyears on them for $650. So if you paid less than that for that 928 I am extreeeeeeeemmmmllllyy jellous! Nice going!
If I was in your position I would be feeling quite well. If you need some 928 parts when the time comes let me know. Also I do think you can adapt the 928 brakes to work on your car.

one of my problems is that ive always wanted a 928, yet i know this is not a good car to use to fullfull that wish ...anyone whos been around these things know the worst thing you can do is buy a basket case and fix it, you may get it done, but in the end you wind up the basket case with a nice car...
then again, its an anything goes car..no worries about altering it or messing something up... i could rhino coat the interior and it would still look much better than it does now...
i was going through the cars records, they go back to 1992...in the past five years alone: all new a/c system, hoses compressor, everything and converted to 134a; rebuilt transaxle, rebuilt torque tube, new updated brakes (big reds, though their not red anymore), new suspension all around, new ansa exhaust (complete), the list goes on and on..mechanically, the car was well looked after...which makes it even harder to think of it as a sacrificial porsche....it came with a set of sheeps as well, im thinking about cleaning those up, sewing them all together with the set i have already and dying them all the same color and making a nice sheep skin rug out of em
oh, and yes, i did pay less than $650..... sorry... _________________ Eric

What year did the 928 become an interference engine? Anyone know?
And Eric, great find! I think after awhile, you'll change your mind about parting it out and you'll probably keep it. That's too good a deal to pass up.
And if you paid that little for it, I'll give you double and come take it off your hands. |

Less than $650 huh? Don't part that out dude. Even if you need an entirely new interior you can still restore it for less than the value you will get once you are done.
Hell, I'm paying 1/3 that just for an '82 928 parts car (and I mean a true prts car that barely has enough left of it to hold the motor in place) but I am getting it just for the motor and maybe the brakes. Has less than 60,000 miles on it. And I feel $225 is still a good deal for this 928
BTW this will be transplanted into the '82 933 project instead of an LT1 (I decided to keep it Porsche but want a V I know this will not be easy but what is?
Oh I know, buying cars you have little business buying is pretty easy, right Eric? _________________ MJ

The 928 engine became a interference engine when it was bumped from 4.5L to 5.0L.
So if the engine is 4.5L no interference problem.
And if the car has a 5.0L engine, change the timing belt on time, or die. |

you guys are killing me...here i had a simple plan to gut and dispose, and now the darn thing is growing on me...
its got the 4.5, 220 hp engine.. i went and pulled the plugs and cleaned them up, couple were fouled, checked the oil (no foam) ,tossed a battery in it and cranked it over.. itll run about 3 to 5 seconds at a time, then it bubbles out, dies faster if i hit the gas...so the fuel delivery is good, spark seems okay..definatly not seized and no knocking..im guessing its sucking air someplace bigtime, so if it is one of the head gaskets, at least theres no oil/water mixing.....
i want it to run so i can move it in and out of the garage as needed, 3200+ lbs is a bit much to be pushing around too much by myself, im not wimpy, but the driveway is uphill, a bit much for me.....well see..ill play with it a little at a time...
my main priority is my 931, once that project is going in the right direction, then ill see about the 928... if anything, itll be motivation to get my 931 finished..
Edit note: IT RUNS NOW!!! not great, but itll go..its a beast!! _________________ Eric
