i am getting a loud bearing type noise when idleing in nuetral, goes away when i depress the clutch. i assume this is the torque tube bearings.
my question is are all 944 ( pre 85 and the later ) transmissions and torque tubes the same? do these swap into the late 931s ( 81-82 ) without modification? _________________ '82 931

Yes. 944 and late (81/82) 931 can swap the diveshaft housing.
While you're at it don't forget to upgrade to the Ford clutch disc! _________________ John

John, I know that clutch change has been discussed here many times, but are you serious that it's a good thing? I'm asking cause I'm about to add the clutch to my new motor and want to save a few bucks. _________________ I have a 78 n\a currently under restoration. |

the clutch change you are refering to is the one that is a direct plug in play ( ford bronco II ) for the 931 right? not the mustang clutch that is used on the earlier 924 5 speeds conversions to the 944 transmissions and torque tubes. _________________ '82 931

First off, I was just teasing. But, yeah, I, and I think Vaughan, have both been more than happy using the BroncoII clutch disc with a 931.
I am probably wrong, but I do not think anyone has listed a replacement disc for the 924 other than OEM. (Using stock 924 shafts).
So it's a project ripe for exploration. _________________ John

Azndrgn's research suggested the disc for a 90-92 1.8L jetta might work as a replacement for the 924 NA, but:
| azndrgn wrote: | | As I said before this is just what the books say, I haven't checked to see if it will actually work since I don't have a clutch disc to compare it with. |

So, what's left is for someone to give it a trial fitting and see that it doesn't interfere with the flywheel bolts or something else. It's about $47 for the Jetta disk vs $187 for OEM Sachs. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
