I'm looking for a book that covers the rear suspension on the 924. I just got the book for my suspension class and it only covers front torsion bars on pickups. Thanks. _________________ 80 924

You need a book that describes how a semi-trailing arm suspension works.
What are you looking to do, though? Redesign, or just tune? _________________ Vaughan Scott

Right now I just want to understand it. I'm going to be replacing all the bushings in the suspension since I'll have access to an alignment rack. I don't really like jumping into stuff without at least some knowlage of how it works. I'll just be setting it back to stock settings I'm going to tune it until I get a chance to race it a few times and can test diffrent settings and understand what changes effect what. _________________ 80 924

Yes, but to what degree do you wish to understand it!
The bible of suspension tuning for racing is Fred Puhn's "How to make your car handle" though it's unlikely to go into specific depth on our suspension (the rear, that is - the front is a standard VW strut).
If you really want to understand, on a scientific level, the geometry of the suspension, you need a full-on suspension design book, like Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics by Gillespie:
http://www.sae.org/servlets/productDetail?PROD_TYP=BOOK&PROD_CD=R-114
Then of course there's the benchmark, Race Car Vehicle Dynamics by Milliken & Milliken:
http://www.sae.org/servlets/productDetail?PROD_TYP=BOOK&PROD_CD=R-146
Like I said, how much do you want to know? _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'm just looking for a mechanics level understanding of the setup. Suspension and steering is one of my least favorite subjects when it comes to cars so I've avoided it as much as possible. I don't really want to do much to it I just want to know enough to keep me out of trouble.
The instructor isn't likely to know anything about that setup so I'll have to provide my own info on it. I'll be replacing all the bushings and doing a 4 wheel alighnment on the car. _________________ 80 924

Mechanic's level understanding? They don't have one. Sorry. However, for the beginner (without heavy physics or math work) get the Fred Puhn book. That and the factory manual/notes on here should get you by. The best source for specific knowledge about this suspension is the factory manual; I found the Haynes nothing but utterly confusing! _________________ Vaughan Scott
