Hi!
When ever I turn the key to ON the fuel pump starts and it keeps on runing. Is it normal? I heard that it should shut off after a few seconds! Besides my fule pump has a a very high and annoying sound. Any suggestions on a fule pump replacement?
Also, the previous car owner had installed a fule pipe, from pump to the tank, but instead off cutting the wire to its normal size, he bent it , so now it looks like a P-Trap and the pipe got worn. What car uses such pipe?
Thanks in advance _________________ 1977 Porsche 924

The fuel pump should come on when the engine starts turning. I wouldn't worry about it though as my one does that even after replacing the fuel pump relay, it actually makes the car start better! If it's a loud noise then it may be on it's way out. _________________ 1982 Porsche nine two four with Carrera GT conversion - people think i'm slow cos it's an X plate!!

However, what you describe of the hose between the tank and the pump, I would be worried about! It's flexible hose, right? If you bend it too tightly, it could kink (pinch together) and restrict the flow to the pump. This could even be the cause of the excess noise from the pump (though they usually are noisy), if it has to fight to pull the fuel through a restricted hose.
Correct hose size should be 1/2" ID.
Or is it a hard line, not a flexible hose? Let me know if the terms don't translate, I'll get the guy here @ work to translate...
This would also mean the car would likely run and drive like crap, since fuel pressure and flow rate could be below spec.
Hope that helps. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hey xpernet, what year is your car?
i know on the early 924's (77-7 there is a connection on the fuel distributor that determines whether or not the fuel pump is activated.
if this connection is broken the fuel pump will be constantly turned on when the key is turned to the accessory possition.
not really ideal in an accident situation.
if the sensor plate inside the fuel distributor is raised (in other words the engine is running or being cranked) the fuel pump will be activated.
this was designed so that in case of an accident and the engine stopped running the fuel pump would cut off.
so i would maybe check this connection, easy check aswell

if its a high pitched "whine" id be wary..thats the 924 fuel pump screaming in pain sound of impending death..reach under there and feel it to see how hot its getting(providing its an external pump)... they can get a bit warm, but if its down right hot youve definately got a problem. And since their cooled by fuel, the last thing you want is an overheated fuel pump...excessive heat and gas just dont do well together..
Id also look over every fuel line, and repair that nasty bend asap. im sure the gang here would be glad to compare some pics to their own if you post them to see if its "normal" or not...also check the accumulator(s) and lines there for leaks , leaks arent always readily aparent, you "should" smell it, but thats not always the case....
another though is to check the fuel pump relay, its possible it may have been removed at some point and jumped out (explaining the "always on" condition) ive seen much worse done and its worth a look. the pump should not run all the time, only for a second to pressurize the system, then again when the car is actually running... _________________ Eric
