Ok so ive finnaly got most the repairs done on my '87 924S, just need to change distrubuator cap, ignition rotors and the igntion wires. Now ive been driving the car around town and have noticed a a noise which seems to be coming from the front left of the car, my guess the front left tire. Its hard to explain it, its not loud but it is noticable with the radio on at a lower level. It only makes the sound when i am accelerating or coasting, but when i press the brake pedal, the noise goes away. The noise speeds up as i accelerate so its most defentley something to do with the wheel.
Now to describe the noise, it sounds like a wheel being turned, whining a little because maybe it needed some oil. Think of the front wheel on a old bicycle, the noise it would make if you spun it. What could this be coming from? Brakes? I was thinking maybe it has to do something with the spedometer cables (i have a jumpy spedometer, maybe its gonna go soon?) because from what i see, the spedometer and odometer work off the front left.
And can i just say, i love this car. It handles so well. Ive made a few turns on the dead streets in my area going a little bit faster than legal.(yes i know, its not safe...but im sure you have done it also). My friends Nissan SE-R at the same speeds has the tires screaming for traction and it even starts to understeer a little. This Porsche, grips without even making a noise.
And one last question that comes to mind, I was pushing 75mph around a smooth turn and noticed the cabin was getting pretty noisey with wind blowing by. Is that normal? All my windows were closed, and the sunroof as well.
And one last question, do after market peformance products (ie. break rotors, sway bars, exhaust systems) for the 944 fit the model 924S that i have? I was thinking about sway bars. |

sorry, i wouldnt know what would be causing the sound in your wheel.
but you mentioned somthing about your speedometer jumping? mine does too. i dont know if you would describe it as jumping, but a clicking every increase or decrease of 5 mph, or approximately every 3 seconds. but once the car is warmed up(been runnning for about 20-30 mintues), it stops. but if i acc. fast or brake fast, or any type of dramatic change of speed it clicks to keep up.
is yours doing the same kind of "jumping"?
and does anybody know? |

Technoduck, be carefull around the twisties...I had a bad experience a while back...after doing a $1,000.00 suspension upgrade, I wasn't used to it, took her out on the twisties goin too fast, lost control, and hit the curb...with all 4 wheels...and bent all 4 wheels...and both control arms...and tweaked the frame a bit. well, I wish you luck...but don't do it too much...or too fast. learn from my mistakes...they are cheaper than your own. _________________ werd B. |

Did you check your front brake pads (both of the inners and outers)?
It sounds like the problem is probably dry or bad front wheel bearings.
Plan on getting in there to repack the front wheel bearings and replace the front grease seals. You should try lubricating the speedo cable while you are in there, and make sure that you adjust the wheel bearing properly when you are done, and seal the hole in the seal cap (anchors the speedo cable), so the speedo cable won't rust, and the wheel bearing grease you put in doesn't get contaminated.
The outers are very small for the loading, and if they are misadjusted, or run out of grease, they come history very quickly.
They are a different size from series I 924 cars (76-85) with four lug wheels (disc/drum brakes). They are the same size bearings used in 68-83 911 cars since the 924S, Series I 924 with five lug wheels, and 944 used the same front wheel hubs as some 911 cars. |

could be a couple of things,
wheel bearings, pull off the dust cap and make sure there is alot of grease
brake pads, some pads have a material added so when your pads get close to the time you have to change them they make a squeel or a very slight noise and when you apply pressure it will sometimes go away, I think they do this to annoy people into replacing there brake pads _________________ 3 928s, |
