Hey guys, I have decided to install the 924S hood supports on my 931 and get rid of the hood prop. Could one of you 924S owners email me the ruff measurements of where mounts are located on the hood and inner fenders? If you happen to have a digital camera, a pics or two might help also.

While you will get no arguement from me about the idea that the gas filled hood struts are more convenient, there are some disadvantages as well.

A couple of aftermarket companies sell, or have sold retrofit kits to with the gas struts, brackets, instructions, and other hardware that you would need ($80-$100).

The gas struts don't last that long. They aren't that expensive at $15-$20 each, but they don't last as long as the rear hatch struts last.

Switching to the factory configuration (and maybe the aftermarket setup too) front gas struts requires switching to a smaller battery, and turning it 90 degrees, because the gas struts occupy some of the space used by the battery (personally, I prefer carrying a big battery when given a choice).

Lastly, while two gas struts hold the hold up more evenly than the single hood prop, they are heavier, and less reliable. When the hood struts are brand new, you may need to be careful to avoid kinking the hood when closing it because they are too strong, and after a year or two, you should be careful that the hood doesn't fall on your head as they get too weak to hold the hood open.

In what year did Porsche add the shock brackets? My 82 already had the brackets installed (even though it had the old hood prop) and I was under the impression this was an 80-82 feature.

I'm surprised to find out this car doesn't already have the brackets.

You will only find the mounting brackets for the hood shocks on late 82 models.

Hood shocks did not come on any 924 prior to the late 82 models.

Thank goodness I have an 82. Hood shocks are the only way to go. There are simply no drawbacks as far as I am concerned.

Here are some photos. I was going to take some measurements for you but I couldn't come up with good points of reference (where I measured from). Hopefully, these will help.

Nice photos Stu2j.

Note the smaller battery turned 90 degrees from the battery in the earlier 924 models?

See the plastic plug below the mounting bracket on the inner fender for the hood strut? That's the plug that the aftermarket kits have you knock out to install a bracket, so you won't have to drill the inner fender.

You do have to drill the hood carefullul (don't want to oush too hard and drill drill the outside skin of the hood) to mount the strut bracket on the hood.

Thanks Stu. The Pics are great. How about measuring from the firewall back to the bracket to give me a rough idea?

I did this to a 78 and it lifted the hood above the fender line on both sides of the back of the hood. I tried to adjust it back down to the fender line using the adjustment on the hood mounting bolts, but could not get it flush.

I did not have to rotate the battery or buy a smaller one.
