I think my alternator is not putting out enough to keep my battery charged.

First of all, it's not clear to me if I have a 90A or 75A alternator. Were there 90A alternators stock?

FCP has a few choices...a Valeo/Paris Rhone is like $300, or a pair of Bosch's that are quite a bit less: The cheaper of the two is 068903017EX, at like $115. Or, for $150, plus a stiffer core charge, the AL115X. There is no obvious reason why one should be better/worse than the others, and all are listed as 90A.

Given that FCP is claiming they all fit, and all put out 90A, I see no reason not to pick the cheapest, it's a Bosch just like the middle one, unless someone on here has knowledge of this model that says otherwise. If you do, please let me know!

I ended up with the AL115X from FCP:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=45275&highlight=al115x&sid=cfe43da969bea316c52c3fbd99e9571f

I found inconsistencies with part numbers and ratings.

Here's the link to the 068903017EX
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-porsche-volkswagen-alternator-100-series-4000-5000-coupe-quattro-924-928-quantum-al109x

If you search the MFG Number listed: AL109X you'll see results indicating that one is the 75A model.

Interestingly, the AL115X lists the same OE number (068903017EX ) on this page:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-porsche-volkswagen-alternator-4000-quattro-4000-5000-coupe-quattro-924-928-quantum-al115x

But if you search the MFG number AL115X you'll see results indicating that this is the 90A model on other retailer websites.

I also searched the SKU numbers and the other MFG numbers listed with mixed results, but I couldn't find anything to indicate that BOSCH SKU
BOS-0986030547 was the 90A model.

The AL115X is more expensive and the core charge is more. From what I found, this one is the 90A model, I had doubts about the other one listed by FCP. They do have a good return policy.

I suspect you're right, and I should get the AL115x. I also found the other number at another vendor attached to an AL24x which shows as not fitting at all. So confusing. Since you have knowledge of the AL115x fitting and working I'm going with that one.

Is there anything special needed to get the pulley and fan off (and back on)? I ask because the alternator page on FCP showed a number of alternator pulley "decoupler" kits. I hate it when I order a part and then it turns out I need something else to actually put it on the car and use it...

Everything was straightforward. I used an impact wrench to “lightly break the nut loose” is the best way I can describe it. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Alternator received, installed, everything was pretty straightforward. I did noticed that the plastic shield thing around the positive harness connection (it's a flat triangular piece) had a corner broken off and sitting in the box. I was able to install the harness without any danger of it shorting to the case, which is why I presume that piece is there, so I didn't send it back. Also, my existing alternator had no such piece, so I guess what I do have there is a bonus, lol.
