Hey all, new here. Just picked up a 87 924s in the past week, so far enjoying going through it. Previous owner wanted to do an engine swap(sigh) so engine was part way apart. Instead of putting it all back in I decided just to pull the engine, do a valve job and take it to a machine shop as well as get the clutch done and motor mounts while I have it accessible. Everything seems clean and plastics are soft. Besides some of the basic things Ive read about to make it a bit more fun to drive, I plan on keeping it pretty stock, not trying to race it, just enjoy it for what it is. Has a pretty exhaustive service record in it's glove box from the day it was bought.

Worth noting this is just a I'm bored from the 'rona and am in no rush to get it on the road type of project.

There is a 85 944 down at my local parts yard, so I am curious if there is anything I should grab off of it for stand by. Any known failures or common replacements I should keep in the garage for future use?

Right now the only non mechanical issue I'm looking at is adjusting the linkage on the exterior door handles as they don't push the latch down enough without encouragement. Seems like ill have to pull the window track to properly access it, or is there an easier way of getting the linkage out that i am not realizing? There is a lot of slop in the door handle as well, seems to push to the side and down rather and directly down so i realize it might require a new door handle instead of just an adjustment.

Welcome, sounds like a fun project!

Make sure the door handles are actually tight into the door: Phillips screw at the back of the door. Sounds like they aren't, and that'll impair the latch function.
