I received MOT advisories for both of the items in the title, for both sides of the car.
Now, we know the MOT testers can be a bit stupid about the 924 sometimes such as the front wheel bearings, which I'm aware are of a taper design and are designed to have a small amount of play which MOT testers will often put an advisory on unnecessarily. And in the worst case, they will make up problems to obtain work for their garage.
Can anyone advise what some simple diagnostics are to determine if issues exist with the strut top mounts or rear wheel bearings?
There does not appear to be any play in the strut top mount beyond what would be expected in a rubber mounted part (you can flex the bushing around a little due to its elasticity using a LOT of force, but it's not "free play" as in a loose bushing). I haven't checked the rear wheels yet. |

The strut tops have a bearing that can fail. If it does the spring wont be able to turn smoothly. you will have a noise (sort of "springy") coming from the strus while turning the steering wheel.
The rear wheel bearings you would hear long before they develop play, but over time it can be hard to notice as it comes slowly. |

^^ if you turn the steering wheel while the car is parked this becomes more noticeable as well.
For bearings if you turn the wheels it will sound slightly rough/gravely if they are bad. _________________ 1980 Porsche 931
