So, someone backed into me with a truck. The bumper scraped paint and put some creases in both headlight covers and the nose panel of my 931. The NLA plastic "grill" inserts are fine, and I imagine it's not terribly hard to find headlight covers, if they aren't easy to pop back out, but I'm worried about that nose piece. First of all, they're rare. Second, they don't just unscrew, from what I've read. And it's not a flat piece. Can this stuff be popped back out, or am I pretty much screwed here? _________________ -----------------------------------------

Depends on how bad it was damaged. But i guess you'll have to drill the spotwelds out with a spotweld drill. Not very easy but not hard either.
You can do it in a few hours at home and then have a body shop fix the nose panel. _________________ https://www.the924.com |

I've been living with that same exact problem for years, as I haven't tackled drilling out the welds to remove the panel... Now it's more motivation to install the intercooler... _________________ Vaughan Scott

"Patience is a virtue" as the saying goes and you will probably need it with the nose panel. I'm going to be looking at the same repair on my '81. If you aren't familiar with the nuances of metalwork this is a great opportunity to learn, if you have patience. If you're not you'll need to have a reputable shop repair it properly or source another. Chances are a nice straight one won't come cheap. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

I'll try to post a picture later. Glad to hear it's an achievable task. I'm not any sort of good with metalwork, but I'm not opposed to learning. I will read up on drilling out spot welds.
I did like the intercooler comment. For grins, are there any write-ups on intercooler installations that use that location? I always thought that was intriguing, given the openings in that panel. _________________ -----------------------------------------

It pains me to read of a 931 which has seen some damage. It pains me more to read the thought of someone contemplating a car is not reparable. Everything is repairable. Theres plenty of folks on this and other forums which have parts to sell if ebay fails to deliver.
Its not hard to remove the front panel, the metalwork beneath and to the side of the 924 with other 924 or 944 parts. In fact, it can be done that most folks will think it was all original in the first place. A little patience. A little time. A little money. And maybe good skills of a friendly bodyshop. Anything is possible. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Sadly, we did the 924S nose transplant on the #77 (NA) racecar after its most recent wall encounter... so I can see where the cut line is!
(for the record, ours was a little further back...) _________________ Vaughan Scott

Mine was on the factory seam so it looks factory to anyone looking closely at the front _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

If you can find a copy of Ron Fournier's "Metal Fabricator's Handbook" it will give you all the basics you need to learn if you feel like attempting the repair yourself. Even if you don't do the repair it will provide you with some knowledge so that when you have a shop do work for you it will give you a "one up" on a regular customer who could easily get conned by someone who does shoddy workmanship because you'll at least be able to ask the right questions, if you get my meaning !
Regarding the little red and white car you see in these photos...one of the best I've seen and a quite knowledgeable caretaker! Study his technique and you'll surely be on the right track! _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Carrera RSR's red and white car is amazing. WELL beyond my capabilities! I would love to do something on that scale, but have neither the budget nor the expertise. Maybe someday!
To clarify one thing, I never meant to imply that the CAR was not repairable. All things considered, it's very minimal damage, purely cosmetic. I was questioning whether the PANEL was repairable, because it's small and has a dent right on that bend above the vents.
If I do drill out the pinch welds to fix it/replace it, it would seem to make sense to fasten it down with screws, rather than reweld it, right? I think the 944 panel is screwed on. Especially if I'm going to put something in there to make use of the vents (e.g. intercooler, etc).
Has anyone experimented with getting intake air from that location? I currently have the stock setup which seems to grab hot air from behind the radiator/in front of the block, to the driver's side. This seems less than optimal, but perhaps trying to run a pipe into the area under the nose panel would end up causing too much restriction. _________________ -----------------------------------------
