Correct sizes for 2.0l block Steve. They are just too cheap to try and ruin and expensive engine re-build! That's the trouble!
I've done extensive searching on the net, helped by work previously documented on here looking for a rod from another manufacturer that will fit. There isn't a straight swap is the quick answer! The long answer is the big end size is the issue. the 924 has fairly big diameter and certainly very wide big end journals. Rods with either the same diameter or the same width are available but not both. The closes rod with same width would need 3mm taking off the diameter of the crank - not ideal for a higher HP build. The correct diameter rod is too narrow and therefore would rely on the piston maintaining the rod central in the bore. Whilst this is a known method, I don't like the idea of the tail wagging the dog and surely there could be a large angular load on the rod during the compression stroke. Stock rods aren't light but they are strong and reliable. I'm still potentially in for ARP provided they are not crazy money. The re-usability is a winner in my application. I'll be using lighter pistons (flat tops) but rev'ing higher too. _________________ UK spec '83 N/A with 931 motor with Eaton MP62 'charger @ 15psi. EFI - 565cc inj. What rods have you found?
A 3 mm offset grind could be attractive... |

OEM specs:
BE bore = 51.6mm
BE width = 27.9mm
SE bore = 24mm
C-C length = 144mm
Mitsubishi 4g63 Gen 1 - With an offset grind this would increase stroke.
BE bore = 47.998mm
BE width = 28.3mm
SE bore = ?mm
C-C length = 150mm
There is a renault rod with simlar specs to above but with 144 rod length IIRC but can't find the screenshot atm.
There is also an option from the E30 BMW early model with a 144 rod length and suitable BE diameter, but narrower than the 924, so would need spacers in the piston to control the rod. This is apparently common in Volvo and Merc engines. *this is from Gegge's post on here a few years back.

It would require that the pistons are "square" to the bore and rod bolt so they can act as a bearing surface in conjunction with the spacer. I'm not sure thats true about the stock pistons or VW flat tops, probably som machining required. |

True. My machine shop asked for me to take a piston in to check readability, but given my 16v head has needed so much work, I decided to stick with stock 924 rods to reduce the risk of something coming through the new head prematurely! That’s also the reason I want some ARP rod bolts if we can pull off a group buy.... _________________ UK spec '83 N/A with 931 motor with Eaton MP62 'charger @ 15psi. EFI - 565cc inj. Not that it helps the Euro guys too much but Pauter has a listting for for both early 2.0L and later 2.0L engines.
