Thankfully not my build. I bought it allegedly rebuilt to spec and less than a few thousand miles on it. Spun a bearing. No idea if it was the rod, the bearing or bolt. Either way it blew cash out my wallet. Still have that block stashed. |
Spun bearings are usually an oiling issue or clearance issue. Maybe the rod big ends weren't resized. Bad bearings, being out off spec when new, has been an issue with 911 bearings Glyco and OEM. |

When Glyco was bought by Federal Mogul, they changed the rod bearing material. The new ones wouldn't take the RPMs and failed with regularity. For racing, we now get them coated. On the 356 and 912s, Federal Mogul changed the aluminum alloy main bearings to steel. Again a major mistake. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

I contacted ARP yesterday. There a couple of issues to get past, but I think we can get them worked out. Patience will be required. I have also contacted EBS and Mittlemeier(?). At this point we appear to be at about 13 with no input from the Aussies or UK. _________________ Mike

Hey Mike,
If you want, I have a "group buy" setup on my website for this type of stuff.
Don't want to make it more complicated, so just let me know if you want to use it. You can see it here.

Everything is just a placeholder, so don't buy anything anyone! _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

I'll call Sunset Porsche and get a price and availability on Monday. If they are available it will probably make our effort impossible to meet the I believe minimum of 10 sets. _________________ Mike

Called Sunset Porsche near Portland OR and bolts and nuts are available in Germany. Bolts $23.66 and nuts $8.81 or about $260 per set. Standard shipping from Germany is 4 to 5 weeks. I asked if they were the standard one time use or upgraded and he said more than likely the one time use. They can be expedited for I believe a 20% premium. The cost of ARP was $285 for the set of 8 bolts in 2016 and a 10 pack of ARP nuts runs about $35-38 available from many suppliers. I would expect that the cost from ARP would be similar to previous.
Suggestions as where to go from here? If really want the ARP's for their mult-use capability send me a PM and we'll see what we come up with. _________________ Mike

Based on the numbers of interest here, plus UK forum and plus potential distributor interest (like EBS), I believe you should proceed with this.
Contact ARP, get group buy pricing info, announce the group buy and pricing, gather buyer info and money and move on. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

c.a. $320 per engine set is to much for me and others in Poland (so 3 sets less needed). _________________ ---

It's a third of the purchase price of a decent 924, regardless of country - your point is valid outside of Poland for sure!
Could we not use 12.9 grade fasteners for the same purpose? They have similar tensile strength.
To me, the 924 is all about creativity and resourcefulness, using the modern availability of information and technology to improve and maintain the cars.
I understand others may feel differently, but paying high prices for bespoke aftermarket parts does not fit my ethos of 924 ownership at all. |

OTOH, when you compare them against the money wasted blowing up engines while racing due to inferior components - in that context, they pay for themselves quickly.
I'm definitely still in... _________________ Vaughan Scott
