|
|
Recently bought a 924 with a bike conversion on it. (first time project car, wanted to learn how to work on cars). It didn't run at the time. first thing i did was replace fuel pump and lines so it now has fuel to carburetor. then i rebuilt carburetor. still didn't want to turn over. It sputters and try's to start with starter fluid but doesn't completely turn on. Bought new spark plugs and took out the old ones but turns out the wiring didn't fit on the new plugs. I put the old plugs back in after cleaning. The car did its usual try and start, but ever since that now it wont even try and start even with starter fluid. almost like I lost spark. I have absolutely no idea what went wrong and what could be the issue. (sorry for the paragraph) |

Welcome to the board.
Your new spark plugs may have tips that can be unscrewed to allow them to work with your wires.
Check for spark (disconnect coil wire at distributor and place near a ground)
Check firing order.
Check camshaft timing.
Check ignition timing.
Check compression.
Check for vacuum leaks. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Thank you so much!!!. I will start going through the checklist
One thing i forgot to add is it backfires a ton when cranking. (Compared to actually trying to start like before)
I have already tested spark plug for spark and I have that.
I have set the firing order correct (1342) I believe going counter clockwise
(It doesn't matter where 1 is right? Just matters that it's in that order?)
Next I'm going to look at camshaft |

It does matter where 1 is. Rotor turns clockwise.
Set timing on TDC on cylinder 1 then see which wire the rotor is pointing at, then connect the wires in a clockwise direction..
From:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=37222&highlight=timing
"Once you've identified TDC on the ignition distributor, and have the rotor pointing to the correct location, put the cap on, and note which terminal on the cap corresponds to the small end of the rotor. This is the #1 lead. Connect your plug wire to this terminal, and then connect that to the FIRST spark plug at the front of engine.
Now, the next terminal around on the distributor cap in CLOCKWISE direction; this is the #3 lead. Connect your plug wire to this terminal, and then connect that to the THIRD spark plug, counting back from the front of the engine.
Go to the next terminal on the cap in CLOCKWISE direction; this is the #4 lead. Connect your plug wire to this terminal, and then connect it to the FOURTH spark plug at the back of the head.
Then the final terminal should be connected to the SECOND spark plug.
So in summary, the SPARK PLUGS should be numbered 1-2-3-4 from the front to the back; the plug terminals should be numbered 1-3-4-2 in CLOCKWISE orientation. Then you connect the wires matching the numbers. Make sense???" _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Alright, so I fixed the firing order, new spark plugs and ignition coil.
When I try to start the car is seems like it really wants to turn on. Almost sounds like it's running but the second I let go of the key it dies.
After it does that. It doesn't want to do it again till I wait a day.
What is the cause of this?
I will note thst the fuel looks really yellow/orangy even after running it through 2 filters |

Does it stink like lacquered gasoline? Filters don't fix that..
And Oh yeah, check that cam timing.. And once you get it running you will need to set the ignition timing correctly with a timing light.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified
