Hi All,

I have just signed on the dotted line to acquire a 1980 2.0 NA 924 race car.
car is based in the UK and needs and engine rebuild - damage TBD. I've never raced before so am very excited about getting it running and learning to race.

A local 924 specialist and breaker is picking the car up and going to do the engine work - he has a cheap running spare so if the damage is bad we will rebuild the spare. Limited performance mods are allowed, and in any case i am more focused on getting the car running reliably than having the fastest engine to start with so it will probably get a faster cam and that's about it.

One area i do want to do properly from the start is overhaul the brakes. this is 4 stud wheel with drums at the rear. Other than change fluid, good pads & shoes, and change caliper seals, is there anything else to look at?
Also - what are recommendations for pad and shoe combos ready available in the UK? I'm looking at 20 to 40mn races. Car will be road legal but don't expect to use it on the road at all. Happy to spend top of the range on brakes.

Is there any particular area you advise looking at as a priority? From conversations with previous owners of the car it is sound and well built (other than the engine of course) and was being raced last year before having engine damage.

thanks for any advice!
james

Thanks Morghen. I’ve already read your SC kit thread, some great work there and your car looks great!

I have some pictures from the seller but not sure how to upload on here?
Car is not with me yet and won’t be for a while unfortunately

Carbotech XP8, Hawk have plenty of pads, i think mintex have some race pads, CL etc

I Used Hawk HP+ back when i ran a n/a on track, tried carbotech XP8 aswell. In the latest issue of the 924 UK owners club magazine there are some pieces about 924 racing. Pritchard uses CL6E pads to get max pad life. I ran both std and special made racing shoes for the rear, but went back to std ones, they were much cheaper and lasted long if adjusted well.

For long races an oil cooler is nice to have, but i assume it already has one. But apart from brake pads the cars can pretty much run endurance racing out of the box, I've tried that aswell

Welcome aBoard James.
You don't say what category or class you are going to compete in.
If it's the 924 series, then you are limited in modifications and must comply with category rules. Current competitors will be able to provide assistance with set up and tips.
In any event, rebuild the calipers, machine discs and fit race pads, bleed brakes with race fluid (high boiling point), adjust rears regularly. Add cooling ducts and remove backing plates from front discs, drill cooling holes in rear backing plates........if allowable under regs.
If it's an open class and anything goes, then eventually aim for 5-lug transplant from a 944S2/Turbo.

@Cedric - thanks for the recommendations. It does have an oil cooler. noted on the 924 magazine i'll check it out. And thanks for the various pad recommendations, i'll check them out.

@peterld - I will likely run in HSCC 70's Road sport. The regs limit the mods i can do. Needs to be original brakes so can't go to 5 lug or discs at the back. Thank you for the advice - will look into what i can do to backing plates.

very helpful pointers chaps, thanks a lot!

You should copy the "Forum code" not "link to this photo"
