Hi,

I am running a Euro spec 1988 924S. Just lately I have noticed that when I accelerate hard as I come of the pedal their is a strong smell of petrol in the cabin. The car also does not have the smooth growling roar it had as you accelerate but a slight, regular bu, bu, bu, bu sound over the top of the roar as you push harder.

They idle is still the same at neutral, power is the same, but fuel economy is down.

No obvious leaking of petrol anywhere.

Any ideas? Any help gratefully received.

It could be that your FPR or Fuel Damper is leaking, drawing fuel into the vacuum system.

Smell for fuel in your vacuum lines, and replace them if you suspect they are failing.

Another way to test the FPR and FD is to pull the vacuum hoses while the car is idling and see if they dribble fuel. Be ready to catch the fuel...

Started going though the problem and pulled the main lead from the coil and the end was corroded. It was a minor misfire and erratic spark. New lead and all is well. Lucky it was not the expensive bits!

The aftermarket distributor caps suck and pop off and visually look fine but when you wiggle the cap its obvious.
