I am getting conflicting part numbers for which coil to use on Olive. It is a 1979 931 and PET says 046 905 105. But ....different websites tell me I can use other part number coils. I know these are sensitive to voltage so don't want to fry my baby. Any advice from the electrical guys ?

According to PET:

059.905.105= 1976-1979 924 NA ROW
046.905.105 = ALL 924 NA US; 1980-on NA ROW; 1979-80 931 ROW; 1980 931 US-spec

Incidentally, the S2 931 / 937 coil part number is 211.905.115.B

Note that up thru '79 the ignition system has ballast resistors.

The Bosch interchange part numbers for the NA and S1 coil are 00 049 and 00 040. I don't know the difference between these, but both will show up listed for the 924, as well as several Saabs and Audis of the same era. Apparently, these are no longer being made. The Bosch number for the S2 is 00 041. Also note that it is likely the 059... part listed for the first gen ROW cars was deprecated in favor of the 046... part.

An aftermarket alternative is the MSD Blaster 2, which can be had in red, chrome, and with or without ballast resistors. The MSD Blaster 3 also works. Both MSD units should fit directly into the standard coil bracket. I resell these on my website on the Tune Up Kits page ($52-$58 depending on option), although I don't currently have them listed individually. Anyone who wants one individually can send me PM until I have chance to update the website. I will also need to remove the Bosch option because these have apparently just gone NLA.

Stupid NLA, f u Bosch.

So the MSD coil you are talking about needs the external ballast resistor correct ? I ask because I have a new Blaster 2 that I got in a parts lot (as well as a bunch of other MSD things) but I don't think it has the separate resistor in the package. I'm sure the coil is from the mid 90's.

It's not the coil that needs it, it's your ignition system. I don't see why you couldn't reuse the existing ballast resistors (assuming they are there, which according to PET they should be on a 79 ROW 931).

The car just has the two wires with ring terminals that come from the main wiring harness. Not sure where the resistor is supposed to be located, any ideas ?
