Just for fun
If you were to buy a new affordable sport car tomorrow, what would be your choice?

I would first look at the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS, I just love the look of that car.
But those would also be on my shopping list:
-Nissan 370Z
-BMW M3
-Mazda MX5

Yeah, depends on your threshold.

Sounds like C6 Z06's are in the $30k range, which is STUPID performance for the money. If I had somewhere to put one, I'd be giving it serious consideration... having worked on 'em, I know exactly what they're capable of.

Though some have said they have far too much power (torque, really) to be a "proper sports car" (including even the base models)...

Even a vanilla C6 is a kick... similar specs to a C5 Z06.

Having said that, though, [flamesuit] a Miata is surely one of the funnest cars ever made [/flamesuit]. E36 M3 are great too, and getting cheap.

What are we talking about here? brand new cars? or newish cars like 5-10 years old ?
If brand new, i'd squeeze my bottom and lease a boxster as these new turbocharged ones are great.

I did look at the Subaru BRZ and Toyota something...but I was let down by a few important things. First..the interior looks and feels so cheap and made from generic materials.
Then its the power delivery and torque which to me is unsatisfactory. From a distance the car looks good, up close its underwhelming. If the BRZ had the WRX engine I would look again.

I cant fit in a Miata...I can fit and drive one but I look ridiculous and its not comfortable for any longer trips as its too small.

M3 is a great car but overpriced and overrated...all bmws are.

Never went near a 370Z, I don't like the styling..its like they wanted to copy something European but failed.

He did, my bad.

Recently rented an EcoTech Mustang. . .that thing was a hoot. The engine was fantastic, and with the new rear suspension pilfered from E36 BMW, it handled beautifully.

I would take an Alfa Romeo 4C. It has some serious flaws in the area of practicality but it is a phenomenal drive

I agree on the power/torque number look low on paper, but so did the 924 and it's still a great sport car.
Good to know about the cheap interior.
I would like to know more if you or someone else drove one about how the car feels, handling and power wise.

Looks great, what is the price tag on this thing?

No I didn't look at power torque on paper I have the feedback from actual driving the thing. I have driven a Honda Prelude 160hp tuned to say 180 and another 220hp Honda and those feel great.

I'm in love with the 4C as well but there are 3 problems with it.
1. its 60 grand if you can get one
2. the interior is not great..
3. no boot space...you cant go anywhere with it.

I can have good fun within hours of my house but great cars are made for great fun.
For me the eastern European to have great fun driving I need to carry a couple of days baggage which is not much for me but a bit for any lady.
The 924 is still the best thing out there for me.
It carries enough for a few days on the road, fantastic to drive, looks special and the build quality is to my liking anywhere I look on the car.

Like I said, as a new car i'd take a Boxster turbo.

Define new
Define affordable
Define sports car

That said:
The obvious choice is the MX5 Miata

Then the BRZ

Then the new Camaro SS 1LE

Obviously the Cayman and BMW Ms are great cars but stupid expensive. The Camaro is underrated IMO and even the more base cars with the 6 speed are fun to drive. I have not driven one of the new Mustangs but they look like a good deal for the money. I really don't care for the new Miatas and they seem awfully expensive for what they are. For the money I would probably get a Hyundai Veloster or VW GTI if I had to buy a new sports type car and was hunting up value.

VW build quality sucks. After working on many, I would never buy one. Plus, FWD is disqualifying from this discussion.

Good point - I worked on the 1LE (well, the V8 anyway), and it's a damn awesome car. I just tend to forget about it in the shadow of the ZL1.

(Yeah, I'm prejudiced, below 500 hp doesn't tend to make my short list)

I hear the V6 1LE is also pretty darn nice, though it lacks all the killer tech of the V8.
